I think the real problems with this piracy is that nobody is trying to restore governing stability to Somalia. I mean how long has it been like 9 years, or some shit, without a formal government in most of the country?
I had read somewhere and cited here before an article about how the piracy in Somalia started when people found that the waters around Somalia were a dumping ground (both chemical and radiological) for European mobsters and subject to overfishing by foreign nationals (until they figured out about the dumping ground part I assume). Now obviously it's grown into freelance piracy for profit, but I'm quite unsurprised and I would hardly say it is the pirate's fault, nobody else was paying them to be coastguard so they became pirates.

A FOAF was a sailor. The ship was probably on the way to or from Djibouti, an common US trading port. I am glad the media is finally hyping up pirates. It used to be a good story for my friend to tell people though, since no one realized there were really still pirates out there.
Most pirates try not to board American ships, since they usually have patrols walking the deck, extra lights on, extra men on lookout, guns on deck, drills and training before going into pirate areas, etc; and generally try to spend as little time in pirate waters as possible.
My friend used to get reports of pirate attacks daily and ensure that his ship's course did not cross those areas. This isn't the first time in recent history an American ship has been attacked by pirates though by any means.
Pirates can only go so far from a coast, since they are usually in little boats that either run out of fuel, or do not want to run the risk of heavy seas. It sounds like this particular ship made the mistake of getting boarded, which is pretty half-ass in the first place. If you are off the coast of Somalia or anywhere around Indonesia/ South China Sea/ Maylasia you better be ready for pirates. It has been that way at least since my friend was sailing ten years ago.
