Projection and the Internet. Misinterpretation?
    #10121794 - 04/07/09 07:45 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

It was looking at the shroomery on the comedown of a low dose mushroom trip awhile back when I truly realized the extent to which I project the parts of myself I do not like onto everything else. This seems to happen most of the times I low dose but while looking at the shroomery it was even more obvious.

I think because the internet is so devoid of expression it creates a blank slate on which to see oneself. This leads to a lot of the personalisms used on the shroomery IMO.

When I am reading something on the internet I tend to give it a voice that may not represent what the writer truly wishes to express. This may be a voice that is angry, jealous, idiotic, it will vary from poster to poster but almost always something bad. Then I will return it with a subtle hidden personalism that creates my own representative voice because I have seen a part of myself that I feel to be threatening.

Much of the shroomery is just a projection of what you are hiding from yourself IMO. This can be very handy for learning about yourself, should you so choose to look.

Good post but remember you are only looking at the negatives in this issue.

I highlighted the positive parts I could think of here. What else can you think of? Or are you just trying to say yes, but less?

Often when I agree with someone or care about their position or situation I'm willing to extend myself to support their efforts in some way. I know I'm not the only one.

Just because you're projecting doesn't mean it's not true.  I'm well-acquainted with my shadow, but that doesn't mean I don't get upset with it when I see it show up in others.

What's not true? What are you trying to say here in counter to my OP? I agree with the second part.

I'm saying that you can project something that's actually there.  In fact, it's often because you have these shadow qualities that you're able to recognize them in others.  So projection doesn't necessarily involve misinterpretation.

But how can we ever be sure that it's really there, and not just a projection?  Obviously we can be clear that a person possesses an objective quality, but when we're making a judgment it seems this is solely subjective.  (Although perhaps one way to distinguish projection from truth would be to assess if the majority of observers concur with a similar judgment, but this still has problems.)

I'd say that the likelihood of a judgment being pure projection decreases if you've known the person for a while and if you have a good track record of discernment.  Plus, if you're able to own your shadow qualities, distance yourself from any emotional reaction, and still find the person to have those qualities, it's more likely to be an accurate assessment.

That's probably true.  I don't think we can ever wholly separate ourselves from personal bias, though.
