Cheap indoor bulk pasturization method / 55 gallon drum +propane torch
    #10109776 - 04/05/09 10:41 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

I use this for gourmet and medicinal but do with it what you will...
when i get the time i hope to post a pictorial/tek

Everything here cost me about 75.00$ (US).
I found the barrel, all i bought was the torch, fuel and plastic bags.
Most people shouldnt have a hard time finding an empty metal barrel and i would think that most peolpe can borrow or already have a propane tank used most commonly for gas grills.

Awhile back I searched for a cheap way to heat a 55 gallon metal drum of hpoo up to pasteurization temps 0f 160-170f.
I researched turkey fryers, immersible heaters, small hot water heaters etc..
The best thing i found was this http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100341111&marketID=139&locStoreNum=3833&categoryID=501201

This is 500,000 BTU (plenty of heat)...more expensive models have heads with adjustable angles that would come in handy but i just propped my barrel up on cinder blocks and angled the torch underneath it.

Everything here can be modified to fit your needs.

I found a metal barrel with two drain holes with screw in stoppers but you can use any metal barrel, just drill your own holes, you dont need plugs.

I then cut out the bottom and flipped it over.

I put a few bricks in the bottom (This will be to keep our plastic off the bottom ,be sure to not cover the drain holes.)

I propped the barrel up on cinder blocks.

I lined it with 4mil plastic and put 3 55 gallon contractor grade trash bags inside each other.

I filled with hpoo.

I ran hot tap water in (you can use cold,it just takes longer to reach temp.)

I filled the bag of hpoo and filled the part in between the 4mil plastic and the metal barrel to keep the bag off the hot sides.

I then aimed my torch at the bottom of the barrel by propping it up with another cinder block at an angle.(you may be able to use a pipe bender to bend the metal tube so the head of the torch is angled but i didnt try...i would be careful trying this because it may impede the flow of gas and could be dangerous)

When it reached 170f i removed the heat and wrapped the barrel with insulation (may not be necessary)

After 90min i carefully unscrewed the plugs (its hot).

I used a long screw driver to poke a hole through ALL the bags.

It took about 90min to drain. ( i did this over a floor drain)

You may have to check that its draining properly every now and then.
If its not just poke it again and clear the drain holes.

I immediately pulled out the trash bags full of hpoo and started filling my mono's because this helps the hpoo cool faster.

thats it! ....ill try to post a pictorial soon.
thanks!

EDIT: Everything here can be modified to fit your needs.
I put my hpoo in bags because i had to transport it to another location and my barrel was previously used for oil.
If you find a clean barrel you can omit the bags.
If you omit the bags you will need a stopper in your drain hole(s) for the barrel to hold water (duh!).
someone who replied to this post suggested turning the barrel on its side and cutting an opening in it for easier access when unloading.
If you need to move the whole barrel i suggest a dolly.
There are many variations possible.

The main point i am trying to convey is that a metal barrel and a propane torch is a cheap, easy and effective means in heating a bulk sub indoors.Ive seen people build a fire under a metal barrel outdoors but for some this is not an option.
This can very easily be done in a basement or garage safely as long as you take precautions to do so.

I would recommend placing the drum on its side and cutting a lid out the side for easier unloading.  I have never actually worked with hpoo, but is it necessary to really have to bag it up?  Can't you just throw it in the water, pasteurize, drain, then unload?  Maybe squeeze out any excess water if needed.

both your ideas would work great.
i used a bag in mine cause i had to transfer it from one location to another and i didnt want to take the whole barrel.
Also,i think the barrel i used had oil in it at one time and wanted to keep the hpoo from touching it.I cleaned it well first but it was just a precaution.
The only other thing about not using a bag would be that you would have to either get a barrel with a stopper or make you own or it wouldnt hold water.
Turning on its side would make it easier too but then i would have the same problem...i'd have to make a stopper.

The main reason i posted this was just to show a cheap heat source that would heat a 55 gallon drum to pasteurization temps because ive seen others asking about it.
I also like the fact that this can be done indoors.

thanks for the suggestions!

I just wrote it how i did it for my needs. It can easily be adapted to others needs.

I hope someone finds it useful.

How much gas do you use? i.e., what is the cost ?

i only went through about 1/4 tank (reg. bar-b-que grill tank...16.99$ US dollars to fill)

if you start with cold water you'll likely use more gas as it will take longer to heat.
