What are pins supposed to look like on cakes?
    #1011802 - 11/01/02 01:05 AM (14 years, 7 months ago)

here's the scenario.

I birthed my first 3 cakes (EQ) on Oct.30th at 1:00AM, its now November 1st, 1:08AM

Now at first, they were growing rapid mycelium , fuzzy mycelium. Being the smart guy I became after READING THE FAQ, I realized this was due to high temperature, and corrected the problem.

My question is, there is "sprouts" of mycelium, coming out, almost looks like small, small spikes in the mycelium. They are all over the top.

Now the picture of pins in the FAQ looks nothing like what I have, and I'm curious, are these the beginning of pins?

Right now , it's just mycelium, nothing else. But the mycelium is forming spikes.

Is this a good or bad thing?

"Fuzzy" mycelium is a result of high humidity. That stringy growth is rhizo growth, that's a good thing.

the temp was way too high for pinning, around 85. Ive lowered it to about 76 now.

the humidity is VERY high, so i'll fan about 5 times a day.

that should fix the problem?

hopefully this grow will go alright.

anyother way to lower humidity?

thanks for the help.

Also, since today is day 3, how long do i have to wait for pinning. If it gets past day 7 with no pinning should i be worried?

Don't worry about too high of humidity with cakes, its supposed to be high. As far as how long you should wait until worrying, as long as your cake isn't growing green and you are providing optimal conditions, relax. But I usually see pins within a week or so.

thank you for the positive outlook  i will try and be optimistic with this grow, its hard though because my last 2 were lost to contams (but hey, they didnt make it this far, so either way its progress!)

These sprouts sound to me like hyphal knots... Keep at it and maybe even lower your temp to 70 or so. There are so many different ways to grow its unbelievable, so as the other said, as long as your cakes aren't getting contams, dont worry.... it'll happen.
