Burst WBS after PC
    #10116008 - 04/06/09 11:01 AM (15 years, 9 months ago)

I've been experimenting with WBS for the past two weeks. Trying different techniques on getting my grains just right. So far I've found that the one that works best for me is soaking for 24-36 hours with no simmer, and PC at 15 psi for 60 min. I seem to get the least amount of burst kernels that way. But the last two batches I've done, I'm having the same problem. After I PC and let the jars cool, I notice that I'm seeing a lot of open kernels. What could this be from? Should I try a different brand of bird seed?

you know i may be going out on a limb here, but i really don't think the busted kernels really effect growth of the myc.  I've over cooked a loaded pc once and all 7 jars were basically 90% busted.  It clumped like mad hell but after a good 5 min shake it was fine.. a bit sludgy but still usable i guess..

The only thing i noticed about the actual colinization is that when it gets towards the bottom of the jar, where all the heavy sludge (starches i guess) fell to, it slows down quite substantially.

But anyways.  I do roughly 20-24 hour soak (i HATE the smell of fermenting birdseed..  especially 20 lbs of it)

then a flash boil just to ensure that the seeds are, i guess, cleaner.  I put some gypsum in the boiling water also hoping it will help with clumping.

then i let them dry for hours n hours n load em up

edit:

oh and best birdseed i've used is bird basics wild bird seed.  you can get it in 20 or 40 lb bags at pet smart for 8 to 14 bucks

I've definitely read that before... But I've also had to toss out many jars in these experiments because of contams. I'm wasting lots of syringes

These jars don't have any sludge at the bottom. The water content looks ok its just the open seeds that bother me. I've read that the starches are whats bad

yea technically they are bad.  but then again cubes are forgiving so as long as its not overwhelmed by large amounts of starch it should just brush it off.  The strain used was panama.  but personally i think they are kind of slow to begin with.

i've never had problems with contams and do most of my transfers and injections open air in an apartment.  Tight'n up your strile techniques.  I even do g2g open air but in the laundry room and i make sure the air has been off for an hour.

Well take a gander at your jars..  if you see less than half the seeds busted.  I'd give it a go.  anymore than that then right, dont risk the spores.  Definitely get some LC going or at least myc water (better way to go) then you can experiment all you want
