Nice fruits, now the important question is, do you know why you don't really need perlite when using casings?

Well yeah. When working with casings, the casing itself acts a mini terrarium for the mycelium. Anyways. GOOD WORK. props to you.

In reply to:

I'm going to take a newbie stab and say because the casing holds alot of water on it's own?

Assuming this is so, would that same casing fair worse in a humidified terarrium/fruiting chamber? (I know you can't answer for sure)

I thin they would do fine in a humidified terrarium, but if you don't need to, why do it? The other problem is, if you over humidify a casing, you can be creating small pools of water, which are great vectors for contams.

Can it be said that the most common casing methods require no terarrium, but simply some plastic wrap?

Which casing methods seem to work best when done in this manner?

While we're on the subject, while waiting for a fresh casing to fully colonize, is it advised to put it in a regular incubator?

Assuming the colinization is strong and complete, wouldn't the occurance of subsequent contamination of the casing, even if placed in a terarrium, be fairly low?

So you leave the saran wrap on, and the fruits grow up into it? There's no problem of condensation on the caps?

yes, The mushrooms will push the saran wrap up as they grow. Havent had one rot yet and they do directly touch water drops. Seems it's not a problem

i use the same system and it works great ,and its darn cheap: all i use is rye ,potting soil and two bins ,very low cost and you get more shrooms per casing ,couse you dont put trays in terarium but use the terarium as one big ass
tray. i dont think you could go cheaper then that and get such good results

do you need to lift the syran wrap up everyday to give it fresh air? do you need to do anything or do you just throw it over and wait a few weeks for them to grow?

so essentially, all the money people are spending on cool mist humidifiers, hygrometers, rubbermaids, timers ect. isn't really nessesary? no terrarium is required?..are these guys just growing out in the open in a room?..wouldn't that open them up more to contams?..but even if they were in a sterile box, does that mean they only need high humidity to get going(saran wrap), then grow fine without it once they've started?..i'm just a bit confused as to why anyone would want to spend money on all that gear, if this method really works as well..seems so much simpler..peace..

i fan my terariums (got two) twice per day manually and mist it at the same time , in the past i had some contam(my terariums are covered with clear peaces of plastic bags which are kept in place by 4 clamps) prroblems couse i had misted it 5 or more times per
day. so conclusion is ,misting casing more then twice per day is just asking for
trouble.and that is real advantage over cakes ,couse they need so muchmore moisture . jeah, that just about covers it. i havw  two 40 x 30 x 20 cm terariums and they along side the equipment needed to grow shrooms costed me ....... ( calculating kunas into dollars ) about....6 or7 usd . and you do get the top result
with this ultra cheap gear
yeah

well i think i might have to relay this info to a friend, and have him try it out..i'll letcha know what he sayz about it..it just seems so simple (compared to what others are doing), although the rye tek at mushmush seems along these lines, and they also claim good results..also crabbyass, you mention the flushes were decent to good..has anyone you've known ever tried to grow with this method along side a typical humidified/air exchanged/terrarium type setup, and if so, how much difference in flushes/yeild/potency was noticed (if any)..peace..

yeah, good idea bug..although one may need to poke a hole or two in the top of the "shower cap" if the elastic is too tight around the edges..it would seem some air exchange is nessesary..and wouldn't a little tray like this make a great gift?..and right in time for christmas

hey crabbyass..at what point do you take of the saran wrap..you mention letting the shrooms push up the saran wrap, but do you then take it off, or leave it on as they mature?

yeah huh?..lazy super slacker broke ass stoner neglect tek... my buddy e-mailed me and says his hygrometer isn't going above 80 doing this so far..although this method would seem to contradict every other "ideal" condition anywayz...and yeah crabby, like someone else asked, how much did that 1 pint tray yield using this method? ..and was it 1 pint of grain or pf cakes, ect?..inquiring minds want to know!..

Re: need for a terrarium? [Re: JOptionPane]

Similar style here - my bins are bigger with clear lids. My babies grow right up to the top and open against the lid (which is covered with condensation) all the time. They are just as healthy and the caps just as pretty as their shorter siblings who haven't touched the top. Also, when working with a robust flush, I sometimes replace the lid with saran wrap, loosely secured, as described above. I use more Lysol when I remove lids, but it allows the babies to push the "lid" (Glad wrap) up and grow taller. This method has worked well for me, with no drawbacks so far....

So anyone else tried this method yet? I have a cake that'll be done colonizing in few days, and planning on using this method.

So I'll go over the procedure, please correct or suggest anything i've missed.

1. Wash the bin, pc the casing materials.

2. Crumble the cakes in a ziploc, spread them nicely inside the bin, with 50/50 just enough to cover the cakes.

3. Cover with a saran wrap, lose enough for the shrooms to push it open, but tight enough to maintain humidity. Leave some room for air btw casing layer and the wrap.

4. No incubator will be used, since crabbyass said it'll show growth in 24hrs(?) due to the thin casing layer. And no spraying until pinning(?)

5. Just the leave the casing in a lighted room, a terrarium is also not neccessary (?) Once the shrooms lift the wrap, spray water twice a day until flush. Harvest.

Did I get everything? Thanks for the replies.

a friend of mine tried this..he said he cased it 2 weeks ago (using the shower cap saran wrap thingies), with no incubation as suggested..he also did some light misting throughout when the casing looked dry..he said now after two weeks he is seeing the first pins..he thinks incubation after casing for a few days would prolly let the myc grow back together quicker, and speed things up a bit..i'll letcha know how long they take to fruit using this method when he emails me again..peace..

yeah..this method is essentially a small scale version of mycofile's "bulk neglegt" write up -> http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Growlog&Number=609532&page=&view=&sb=&o=&fpart=1&vc=1 ..i'll see if i can get my friend to spawn poo in 15 qt. dishpans, and cover with the larger saran wrap "shower caps" (i think they make em?)..see how that goes..although this would essentially be the same as the bulk neglect method metioned above, it would allow the smaller containers to be incubated first to theoretically speed up colonization and therefore overall growing times..i'll letcha' know what he sayz..peace..
