it's sad that you have to be that careful at festivals, some people are like vultures, they'll go after anything

The thing is you don't have to be that careful at festivals. I think a lot of these people are making way too big of a deal out of a couple isolated incidents.

Sure some people may have been robbed or hit with a gas tank at a festival before, but honestly, do you think your chances of being robbed are better at Bonnaroo or walking around the streets of your home town? Shit there are drivebys, muggings, robberies and murders within 2m from my house all the time. Just because its an event people get so scared and nervous.

Its like driving in a car vs a plane. People get all batshit scared about riding in planes because its not as common as the car even though cars are infinitely more dangerous.

your point is well taken - however i think a lot of people, esp if it is one of their first festivals, get into a super hippie-dippie mindset when they see how much people are partying and having fun around them, and ignore basic precautions. e.g., don't leave $2000 in your tent. don't leave your stereo sitting out at your campsite when nobody is there. don't pull out a fistful of cash when on tons of acid to buy some nitrous. basic things that you wouldn't normally do, but when the festival mindset takes over, you might forget that they aren't necessarily smart.

Definitely good advice. You do have to keep your head on straight and take basic precautions, especially for the first fest. I just don't want people who are preparing for their first fest to think that they have to be afraid. Something may get stolen, but the chances of you being beaten up and robbed is slim to none.

Just be smart!

i didn't make this thread to scare people. theres no need to be afraid when you go to a festival. but like krishna said, people get into that "we're all one big happy family here" mindset and forget to take basic precautions.

its easy to get all lovey-dovey when rolling or tripping and think that everybody loves everybody. and normally thats true for your group of friends, and many many groups just like yours. what people need to remember, is that theres a group of people that know that people are going to be in that mindset. and they plan on taking advantage of those kind and loving people.

once again: keep your cars locked, don't stash a bunch of cash in your tent, put your stereo away when you walk down to the show, if you're "moving" a product don't carry too much on you at one time, same goes for large amounts of cash-(people look for that sort of thing),.............etc, etc, etc.
BASIC PRECAUTIONS-KEEP YOUR HEAD ON STRAIGHT-BE CAREFUL AND USE GOOD JUDGEMENT.

I recommend you make very good friends with your neighbors at the place you camp. that way you can watch their back and they can watch yours.
that way you can have eyes on your camp when you're not there.

excellent advice joe. i'm glad you pointed that out.

making friends with the campers surrounding your site is one of the best things you can do. not only for the protection of your site and belongings, but it is a bond that helps develope that tight-knit community.

when we were at big cypress, i had about a 1/2 pound of silver pearl and lots of beans and cid in my truck. somehow i got distracted and left my truck door open when we ran down to catch the start of a set. my neighbors knew i had alot of "supplies" in my truck and saw the door open. a couple of them sat at my site and guarded my truck while a few came to find me to let me know. they didn't want to lock the truck because they didn't know if my keys were in there or not(i jammed my stereo for everyone to hear pretty often).

the point is: having trustworthy neighbors are the most valuable asset you can have at a festival.

Exactly. I would like to see the sense of community come back to the scene. I'm sick of this"every man for themselves" vibe at the festivals I attend regularly.

It would be nice to see some of the old time family traditions re-turn to the lot scene but how do you start?? who do you trust?? I'm sure Shakedown Street is still around...The greed has started before we even get to the shows for example outrageous ticket prices....Not able to get tickets on-line because they sell out in 5 seconds.....These aren't the real fans I know but still The Bands should do something about the price demand...The Dead would hold back tickets that went on sale the day of the show at neighboring ticket offices. Phish use to do the same thing If you didn't get into the show and grabbed some trash bags and started cleaning up the lot chances were some guy on a golf kart would come by and hand you a ticket...I guess what I'm saying is in order for the lot scene to be cool again it has to start with the Bands working with the venues....and of course stay of hippie crack!!!..........>>>>^E

Are you serious?

Camp Bisco! Mountain Jam!

But you really shouldn't go anyways, if you would just be a sketchy dealer anyway.

as soon as my buddy says "yeah, i've got some nugs", all of a sudden 6 or 7 extra guys appear and surround him? and then a couple of them follow us to our site a couple hours later? good intentions were the furthest thing from these guys mind.
