Illuminatus! Trilogy FIRST DISCUSION
    #1011288 - 12/18/02 09:52 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

Hopefully Some of you have read up to pg 90 - and have had some of the same 'feelings' as you read this great work - Like "Wow, this book seems relevant to a lot of the Situations going on about our heads right now.

So Lets discuss how "There will Always be a Fernando Poo"

And I particually loved the line:
Innoffensively Fascist - Conservative Liberal Communist Proclamation. (How I feel about my Govt these days  )

I'm so happy to see this thread, it makes mne very glad to have joined this forum.

I'm an enormous RAW fan, but it takes a LOT of background knowledge to understand Illuminatus (and tolerate it, at times.) Leary's neurological circuits, for one, but I'm sure you've picked that up by now. My favorite part is how George (or whoever) always masturbates when he's terrified. Priceless!

Like, wow!  I never thought that at while I was reading!(well, maybe a little.... )But now that you mention it.........yeah.  This is an easy one.  The image of a little country in the Middle East keeps coming to mind.  You know that one with the brutal dictator?

Fernando Poo was simply a scapegoat.  Everyone needs a scapegoat. (especially childishly arrogant world superpowers  )

Scapegoating is always necessary, but your ability to scapegoat well is the important thing....And I just realized that I can't even mention what I was going to discuss without giving out a slew of spoilers. Remember this, partcularly towards the end of book four...

The Illuminati and the Discordian Society are each others scapegoat.

For me, it was interesting to see how quickly the Fernando Poo incident goes from paranoid halucination to firm reality. (Reality grows out of the barrel of a gun) The Americans tell the world that they'll go to war over Fernando Poo unless Russia and China withdraw, but noone can withdraw without secretly invading the island first. The Guvermint creates the Fernando Poo crisis out of thin air, through their unflagging belief that the crisis exists...the crisis MUST exist! Fernando Poo (and the threat it represents) doesn't even exist until the President announces it on television.

In other news...

I started having conspiracy dreams a few days after I started reading the book. Messages from the Illuminati popping up on my computer, strange faceless men looming behind me with no apparent purpose except to unnerve, and one foiled assasination attempt on the Queen of England. Luckily, I spotted the booby-trapped lightswitch that was to electrocute her.

Today, I was watching Christian-fundie television when Pat Robertson starts talking about a new law protecting the right of citizens to go wife-swapping in Bavaria. There's just no word to describe a senile televangelist decrying the moral decline of Bavarian men and women.

"Bavarian wife-swapping? Terrible! In Bavaria of all places? Bavaria?!? Terrible!"

My theory: The Illuminati are finding a resurgence of new initiates in the Swinger clubs of Bavaria. New 'members' are drawn in through the whole Hassan i Sabbah 'Garden of Earthly Delights' scam, drugged and screwed until they'll do anything you say. Riding the crest of a second Sexual Revolution (unexpectedly rising out of Germany this time), the Illuminati will legalize all drugs and prostitution and take over the whole show while everyone else is busy smoking a fat joint and screwing their neighbor's significant other.

But that's just a theory...
