peptone lc for a little boost
    #10112415 - 04/05/09 07:17 PM (15 years, 2 months ago)

THERE ISN'T MUCH ON THESE FORUMS ABOUT THE USE OF PEPTONE. I have used it different ways in agar not much of  a differnce.. I have been growing blue oysters latley. i noticed that the karo 2-3 ml per 100 didn't do it quite as good. so i used some peptone in the lc .. i use 12 ml karo 400 ml water and just enough peptone to turn the water a little yellow hardly. my peptone is so old that its not powder anymore but a goo.. it works great though..just a little something i though i would through out there .... anybody else use peptone around here ... and for what ?????/

Peptone is a mixture of polypeptides and amino acids formed by the partial hydrolysis of protein.

It simply provides a source of easily digestible amino acids.  It's good for supplementing simple media.  For media like PDA or MEA there is really no reason to add it.  For your sugar-type medias it might provide a bit better growth.

FYI caps lock is on the left side of your keyboard.

Peptone is only going to help with sugar based media.  That's why we usually use PDA or MEA, because it's complete and doesn't require adding things like peptone or yeast extract.

Yeast extract is also a suitable addition if you don't have any peptone on hand or want to save some money.

Just wondering since I'm just getting into LC/GLC/Agar & I'm real intersted in Mycological Peptone as well as Gentamycin Sulfate for use in cultures, do you still feel the same way about the peptone today. As mentioned before it basically just provides nutritious aminos to the fledgling mycelium so I can't see how it'd be any different 4 years later but in this hobby ya never can be too sure. Thanks!
