hah.. thats right... it read somewhere on the forums something about the digestion that takes place in meat eaters are different then non meat eaters... so... thats why we use horse.. cow... and other dung... oh well.. i guess the only way to find out is actuall trial and error.. unless someone will whip out some scientific data on why human shit wont work....

personally i wont even try it.. but im a bit curious on the outcomes and/or reason why it wont work... ;]

Well Sure, go to your local feed store and buy a bunch of grains, and start chomping away for a week or so....In all seriousness though, i'm not sure that human dung would really work because of our different acid substances than animals in our stomachs...Im not sure if they r stronger or what, our acids i would think would possibly break down the nutrients more than animals does, thus depleting the nutrients the mushies need to strive on... But if u decide to give it a try, go ahead...but he's defenitly right...Cow/Horse dung is REALLY cheap, and usually if u just find a farmer within an hour and half drive, they will almost always let you have as much as you want for free...I'm talking trash bag fulls!!! :laugh:

People post this question once in a while and are usually torn apart for asking (in part because their question is not serious). The thing is, it probably is possible to use human shit as a substrate, provided it is properly composted.

The pH of finished human compost is usually around 7.4 (good for mushrooms), and has no additional bad microbes compared to horse or cow compost (because the thermophilic composting and pasteurization kills these microbes). I believe it has an adequate nitrogen content and nitrogen to carbon ratio (as well as other nutrients), although I'm not sure of the actual numbers once it is compoted (although fecal matter has a nitrogen content of 5-7%, a little high). If you are serious about using human waste as a growing substrate, check out the Humanure Handbook, now online for free: http://www.weblife.org/humanure/default.html

It is probably more cost effective to use horse, cow, or elephant dung, but I don't see any reason why your own shit couldn't be substituted if the proper carbon-nitrogen ratios were obtained. I believe people are quick to dismiss this on emotional (or economic) rather than scientific grounds.

sheeps have slightly different digestive systems and also they eat leaves, at least the goat I saw did! as for worms, they eat dirt. elephants eat hay and p-nuts. horses and cows eat mostly grass, and you want grass in your shit. lets see, does the shit of *any* herbivore work? I say just horse, cow and elephant if ur lucky. chickens are herbivores and so are pigs

but wait.. sheep are not goats. P-nuts are only a very small fraction of what elephants eat (and only in zoos)and yes humans are omnivores and can utilize nutrients from many sources. Oh and pigs are omnivores. It would be wonderful to hear about your health after you go on an all-meat diet with nothing else, but water. Call us from the hospital. I'm sure other people will have more things to tell you.

I think human feces can work, so if you are inclined to experiment .. go for it. Just make sure you know everything there is to know about this, as human feces can contain some very nasty pathogens if not properly prepared.

Yeah, its so unbelievable that its funny. I don't understand how this kid can function in everyday society. But it does suck when he tries to guide people, especially because he says it with such authority. The only problem with his posts is sometimes they cause flame wars that lock threads. Some of the threads could have been educational, but they just turn into "Rip LSAuser a new asshole thread." I'm amazed at the persistence he has coming back here day after day making his usual posts. I almost feel bad sometimes. Oh well.
