Pre-Employment Drug Screen?

I posted this in the LNC last night but it got skipped over, so this seems like a proper place.
I'm takin a break from smokin cause I'm starting a new job this week. No where in the job listing, the 2 in person interviews, the offer letter, or the correspondence of me accepting the job have they mentioned anything about pre-employment drug screening, employment based off passing a drug test, or anything anywhere. I'm taking a break just in case. My method is drink a lot of water the day of a test, take these capsule I have to add riboflavin, creatine, etc to the water. Yay science.
Anyways, if they have not mentioned it anywhere or at anytime, and I have asked them "What steps do we need to take between now and my first day?" And they told me to bring in some documents (SSN, Driver's License, Canceled check) and didn't mention anything about passing a drug screen, do you think I'll be tested?

Sounds like you're not going to get tested. I usually only hear of testing at chain stores/restaurants. Start smoking again dude.

No, i don't think your going to be tested, but they also could do it if they wanted to, I would imagine.
There's pretty much no law on the subject most places in the US unless its a federally mandated test, so they could probably spring one on you if they wanted to.

So I just got an email back from the person who hired me. She sent me to employee handbook. I've read through it, and it doesn't say anything about pre-employment or mandatory drug screen. The first mention of "drug" in any context is under the Discipline section showing examples of things you may be disciplined for:
10. Failure to take and/or pass a drug or alcohol test when asked. 11. The possession, use, sale of, or reporting to work under the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol. 12. Use of prescription drugs which inhibit one’s ability to work.
Then another little section:
Use of Alcohol or Illegal Drugs [The Company] is committed to the establishment and maintenance of a drug and alcohol-free work environment. All employees and independent contractors are required to report to work free of alcohol, illegal drugs, and prescription drugs that affect performance. Periodic drug screening may be utilized to assure compliance with this policy.
So in my mind, I think I won't be pre-tested, and if I don't give them a reason to think I'm a shroomerite, then I should be good.

Are you going in with a temp agency? Most agencies may require testing although the company does not. I wouldn't start smoking in celebration until you are a permanent employee, I was in the same situation once and got nailed w/ a test from the temp agency, although the company itself didn't test.

sounds like the handbook at my work. They did give me pre-employement drug test, but this also states, IMO, that they only want you to not use drugs AT WORK, and really aren't too interested in what you do at home as long as it doesn't affect your work. I know my place doesn't test after pre-employment unless your injured or they have reason to believe you are under the influence at work...

I don't understand why companies refer to drug use at work and then do testing that is incapable of distinguishing betwen at work intoxication and any other type of conumption.
Big problem with workers comp, in my opinion. They do testing with no effort to distinguish between intoxication at the time of the accident and use at any other time.

well, one thing I also forgot to think about, most companies don't do an on site test, but rather give you a certain amount of time (a few days) to go to a lab and get the test, so I shouldn't be tested when I come into the office for my first day.

That is standard language in just about all corporate environments. They all want to appear that they are against drugs. Tests cost a lot of money and most will not bother. They always tell you if they are going to test because they don't want to pay $50 or more and waste it. If they tell people about it beforehand then it scares off the stoners. In most companies, even the ones that test preemployment, they only test again if there is an accident at work and someone gets hurt and it's your fault.

true, but they way that it is worded says they are only worried about it at work. But if i smoke weed everyday for a week, and have an accident 2 weeks later, i would still fail...luckily, i don't smoke weed enough or have a job that i could really get injured at to worry about that anymore, at least they don't do true randoms...

Sounds to me like they're only going to drug test you if you apply for workers comp from getting hurt on the job. Not sure what kind of job it is, but if you do fail the screen for work. comp, it exempts them from helping you.
Just something to think about if its a physically strenuous job / you're in it for the benefits as well as pay.

Synthetic urine has never failed me. It's hard to use for random but for pre-employment it is the shit. no way to fail. I've used it numerous times so has my gf. 20 bucks at my local head shop for no worries it's great.
