You can remove the foil right after sterilizing. You want to do this so that the dry vermiculite layer can dry out ASAP, so it may act as a contam barrier.
The foil can come off and stay off. As for how long they will stay viable...
Sterilizing stuff gives you a window of opportunity, I guess. Which could be widened by refrigeration, but I would use them ASAP, to reduce the risk of contams. I personally would resterilize after like a week or so...

Ok, if you put them in the fridge, be sure to wipe them down fully w/ alcohol before you inoculate. The fridge can be a dirty place, even though it slows down growth!

haha especially mine... but yea this will be the only time i need to wait until nocing my jars. i'm just waiting for the spores to get here. (I was expecting them to be here today and that's why i went ahead and sterilized them)

LSD- I hate to be a buzz kill, but everyone i've known that used the boil method over the pc or autoclav, turned out w/ contams, not sayin' u will, but shoot em up fast and keep that foil on, it won't harm the dry layer too much and will cut down on airborn contam. especialy in a batchlor pad (just a guess in loc. w/ this website);)

I assume ur not usin tape, that's cool but what I've done w/ next to zero probs w/ jars is cover up after w/ the foil and let inoculate. Then, flip later if u need to, but leave the foil on untill the myc has the army stong and defense up (ie. good growth all over). I mean, why not leave thhe foil one, it aint hurten anyone?

You must not know too many people who properly steam their jars. I've done it for many years with complete success.
The foil should also ALWAYS be removed when the jars come out of the sterilizing pot. The foil is to protect the brf from the water that drips off the lid during the boiling. You don't want that dripping into your jars. If you leave the foil on, the moisture and heat produced by the colonizing mycelium gets the dry verm barrier wet, and this leads to contaminants traveling right through it to the rice flour below.
Next time, don't steam your jars until you have your syringe in hand. Make certain not to start your timer until steam is escaping from under the lid of the pot, and steam for 90 minutes after that time. A common mistake is to start timing when the water boils, and this is incorrect procedure. In fact, I'd call this a trial run, and make up a fresh batch when the time comes. RR
