Casing troubles
    #10109189 - 04/05/09 07:09 AM (15 years, 9 months ago)

Hello everyone. I had temps below 19C so I figured I'll throw in a little portable heater in the room where my martha set-up is. Well, it raised the temp, but humidity dropped in the chamber down to 71. In any case, I got an extra humidifier and the humidity is back up to normal. Right before I had these issues I patched the casings, but it seems that during the time that the humidity was low the top layer of the casing dried out. I've been spraying it with some water but I cant see the mycilium growing any more. So I guess my question is - what should I do? Should I just spray the casings a couple more times and leave them in the fruiting chamber with 90ish % rhm and the mycilium will grow on its own or do I have to do something else? Thanks in advance for your input.

im no expert in any way. but from what i have read 19C is ok. although its not optimal. i have read most people just fruit at room temperature and prefer not to use a heater as it will dry out the casing. and extracts moisture out of the air, decreasing humidity and form condensation.

ive made the mistake of misting a casing, or an uncolonized sub i thought looked a bit dry with tap water. now i must have extremely hard water(which i know i have fucked up water)bcuz it seems to have hurt the myc, and dried it out still

USE distilled water when you mist subs/casings

Do NOT use distilled water for misting.  Hard water is fine.  Guess what makes hard water hard?  Answer: Minerals such as calcium, sulfur and iron, all things we add to our casing and substrate mixes when we use gypsum.  Hard water is better than soft water and a million times better than distilled which is not recommended to use.

You must mist your casing layer a few times daily.  If you're providing proper air exchange, your casing layer will dry out, even if you have 99% humidity.  This must be replaced by misting.

well what is it in my tap water that nothing likes then?

we have notoriously bad water up here anyway

the other day i had a dry patch in some recently spawned sub. so i misted it. for the next couple days the grain in that area looked completely void of all mycelium...

i have a tray, thats been colonizing a long ass time well over 2 weeks. small tray. high spawn ratio. was a bit dry, and ive just ruled the stalling to hydrating with tap water.

sorry to give bad info. but i think ill make the switch and see if it makes a difference. maybe my water has a bit more in it than the beneficial minerals
