So Ive acquired some bird seed, as Im getting tired of the BRF substrate and Im ready to move on.
Im not sure if this particular mix will work well, so Im asking my fellow shroomerites for some advice.
Ingredients on the back of the bag--
-sunflower seeds -millet -cracked corn -peanut parts -safflower
Other stuff on the back of the bag--
crude protien- minimun 12% crude fat- minimum 20% crude fiber- maximun 15%
Think itll work well?

And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me,

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.
And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree,
there will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is still a chance that they will see, there will be an answer. let it be.

Most WBS teks here are crap and will leave you with wet and/or busted kernels. The best way I have found to do WBS (especially cracked corn mixes) is to rinse grain very very well and soak for 4-24 hrs with gypsum (plaster of paris). Then cook on high in spaghetti pot with plenty of water for 15-20min right from the start of turning on the stove. The water will just begin to simmer, then take pot off stove and drain in spaghetti strainers and place strainers on top a towel in front of a fan for about 25min while mixing grain up with large spoon (or hands) every 5min until outside of grain has a dry look to it and grain does not stick much to hands. Then it is ready to load.

In my last grow I did, I pretty much called BS on removing the black sunflower seeds by using 100% BSS for spawn.
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/9860122#9860122
Nothing wrong with the BSS, taking out the floaters is waisting time, and perfectly fine grain.

"We have to create culture, don't watch TV, don't read magazines, don't even listen to NPR. Create your own roadshow. The nexus of space and time where you are now is the most immediate sector of your universe, and if you're worrying about Michael Jackson or Bill Clinton or somebody else, then you are disempowered, you're giving it all away to icons, icons which are maintained by an electronic media so that you want to dress like X or have lips like Y. This is shit-brained, this kind of thinking. That is all cultural diversion, and what is real is you and your friends and your associations, your highs, your orgasms, your hopes, your plans, your fears. And we are told 'no', we're unimportant, we're peripheral. 'Get a degree, get a job, get a this, get a that.' And then you're a player, you don't want to even play in that game. You want to reclaim your mind and get it out of the hands of the cultural engineers who want to turn you into a half-baked moron consuming all this trash that's being manufactured out of the bones of a dying world."

i just rinse and soak over night. i dont bother scraping off floaters unless there is a ton. then i simmer them until they start splitting. then dump the water. keep filling up the pot with hot tap water and stir and dump. keep doing this till the water your pouring off is pretty clear. then dump into a strainer and let sit for fifteen minutes. hope that helps

Any WBS that tells you to simmer for any length of time or until kernels bust is crap. The only good grain tek here is RR's grain tek, which my method of handling WBS is based on his tek, minus the extended boiling.

Well, I guess that makes my tek crap! I suggest you keep an open mind on other member's teks. I realize what may work for some may not work for others and vise versa but there are PLENTY of Great ideas out there that are tried and true. Quote:

Is a bold statement. I'm sure if you asked Wronguy, Monstermitch, Agar, Hyphae, Magash.... ect. ect. They would probably give you their own take on the WBS thang. Keep an open mind.

There are several ways to skin a cat. As long as you hydrate the kernels properly either through soak, simmer, etc they all accomplish the same results.

Did some one say Agar and Magash? I leave for a couple years for some reasons and come back and there gone. I miss em both so much. And yeah i think the new comers to the boards are hanging on RR to much. The guy is damn good and knows his shit, but so does alot of other people. And im sure he will even tell you to get out there and learn and experiment. You wont progress as a cultivator if you just follow all of his tek's every time.
So before you go spouting off with comments like that show us something to back it up. (pics of failed jars from other teks and pics of colonized jars from your way) would be a good start to backing it up. and even then we can find a reason the other teks didnt work for you and i almost bet it wasnt the tek but human error instead.

Doodle is right.
What everyone should do, is doubt everything and every tek.
Test all of them and decide for yourself. Legitimate personal experience and trial and error should always mean more than words in a book or text on a screen. Look at a tek as a starter guide, not a bible.
