PF Cakes -> WBS Question

OK... so the plan is to crumble my PF cakes into some WBS jars. My question is about the dry verm layer on my cakes. This is a protective layer so I'm assuming it's gonna have stuff I don't want it my WBS. I'm transfering in a glovebox but don't really want to dump the dry verm in the glovebox for obvious reasons. Is this being too cautious or how should I go about removing the dry verm layer?
Many thanks

I'd suggest against trying to crumble the cakes into WBS. You're going to have to physically handle the cakes (either with your hands or some kind of tool) to break them up to transfer to the WBS. Even without the dry verm barrier, this has fail written all over it.
I suggest you save yourself the time and likely bad end result, and fruit the cakes, or crumble them in with a pasteurized bulk substrate.
If you want to work with grain, start off with a MS inoculation, and from there you can do transfers easily.
Once the grain is 100%, bang it against a bike tire or phone book to get all the kernels separated, and then pour into the other fresh jars. This makes things much much cleaner and easier.

Nice rasta tag
That can be too catious or not depending on:
was there, tap? - yes, no worries
Clean enviroment? - yes, no worries
Are you over careful? - yes, don't open jar in glovebox
Do you have agar and time? - yes, grow on agar test for cotam
But in general I wouldn't worry about it. If you open that jar somewhere and scrape off dry layer, it has a good chance of getting an airborn bacterial or spore anywhose.

That's not a valid procedure. You can't get rid of the dry verm layer and still keep the cake sterile. You can't do g2g using brf cakes. RR

RR - I've read multiple threads and grow logs that have successfully transfered BRF cakes to grain (a few of them WBS). I don't really know why you try to shoot others down in such a matter-of-fact, short, cold way. I've noticed that anytime I've asked a "valid" question you never respond, yet when I ask a "n00b" question you are the first to respond with a booming "Can't be done!" or "No". It's one thing to say "You run a high risk of contamination if you do it that way" and it's another to say it cannot be done at all or that it's not "a valid procedure" when in fact multiple people have done it. Can it really be impossible if other people have done it?!
This being said, you are extremely knowledgeable and I always hope that you respond to my posts because I usually learn something from them. This is why everybody on the site looks up to you as a mycologist.
But it's funny... I've always found mushrooms to be a humbling trip, not an ego trip.

If you want to use BRF cakes for g2g, you will need to use jars that have filters on the lids, and no verm layer in the cakes. Then you need to sterilize with a pressure cooker, just to be sure it's 100% sterile inside. Then let the cake colonize 100%, and in a flowhood or glovebox you take a flame-sterilized knife, cut pieces from the cake and use the knife to transfer these pieces to your grain jar.
However, I have never tried the procedure myself, so I can't guarantee it will work, but this is how I would do it if I were to try g2g with cakes.
There are better procedures though. Why not fruit your cakes, or just let them pin and take a good looking pin... place the pin or a piece of a fruit on agar, let it colonize, transfer until you have a clean culture, let the clean culture colonize the whole plate, and then make myc water from the agar plate. Then use the myc water to inoculate your grain jars.

I am letting some fruit, but I also want to experiment with getting the most bang for buck (or cake). I am transfering them to jars with polyfill filters (no verm) but the jars that are colonized have the verm layer.
What the question is is how to remove the dry verm from the colonized jars in a sterile manner. I'm expecting contams of course, but I'd like to get a few non-contams for a monotub. Any other ideas?

Forget about doing g2g with those cakes. There is no way to remove the verm layer in a sterile manner. If you want "more bang" for your cakes then spawn them to bulk. You can easily get 2-3x yields with a bulk substrate, if you spawn at a 1:2 ratio. I suggest looking into coir. It's easy & effective.
