God awful slow colonization
    #10107757 - 04/04/09 10:33 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

This topic has been brought up in a few threads before, but I can't find an answer to my specific question.

I have 6 jars that have been colonizing for over a month now, and they still are not completely colonized. Most of them are colonized over the entire surface, but very thin strands of mycelium (thin and fuzzy rather than thick and fluffy looking). Anyways, my question is if I mix this in with my high mountain compost poo, might it colonize faster? I am starting to think the rye doesn't have much nutrients for the mycelium, as the mycelium doesn't seem to be making its way through it very quickly - so I was thinking adding it to the high mountain compost (full of nutrients) might give the mycelium a kick start.

What do ya think?

I am planning on moving in a month, and need to put these jars to use before I move. I've heard Orissa is a very aggressive colonizer, but this wait is starting to get absolutely ridiculous.

If the jars are taking forever than your technique is likely suspect.  There is no reason to suspect a lack of nutrients, and I wouldn't suggest spawning the jars if they're not 100%.  Thats certainly risking contamination of the entire grow.

if its just the top ive heard of people turning the jar upside down for co2 or something.

it only takes a few things to grow. temp 70-80f, darkness, gas exchange.

ive broken some jars and bulked them. if 1 jar ca knock 10 then enough is enough. just contams can get you.

Unfortunately, given the timeline I have to complete this grow, and the fact that I am not going to be immediately able to grow where I am moving, I am put in the corner of crossing my fingers and using the partially colonized grain. I think air exchange might be the problem, but I am reluctant to loosen the lid or something that would introduge unfiltered air.

So, thinking I might chance it, and see what happens. Debating now more on whether to shake the hell out of the grain and mix it all with the poo, or try to specifically spoon out the colonized stuff only. Seems like specifically spooning out the colonized stuff would give the mycelium much more exposure to possible contaminants.
