Accepted Addictions

If addiction is wrong, and the potential for addiction makes the object of that addiction wrong(ala drug war), then I have a few things that need to be illegalized immediately:
food
T.V.
the internet
sex
masturbation
video games
shopping
caffiene
sports
The list goes on. So who will join my fight to start the war on all these things. Write your congressman. You can make a difference. Let's stop all addiction right now by eliminating anything that could be the object of detrimental habitual behaviour now!

its not thats its right vs wrong, it never is in my opinion, but destructive vs constructive.
a drug, or addiction that may be destructive to me, may be very constructive to you.

I know what you are saying, because I have said it many times before...anything can be addictive. Addiction is a very, very subjective word...some types are obvious (at least to most people) but some types are not so obvious and often just as harmful.

Good post, thank you for your time!

destructive vs constructive is a good way to say it, but its a little too loose. Some things arnt constructive at all but arnt dangerous in any way (tv, video games, bla bla bla) and I cant find anything wrong with being addicted to those. I can however find problems with being addicted to a drug, which may be extremely enlightening and very constructive but is still harmfull to your health. there is a problem with being addicted to those drugs.

But not all drug addictions are particularly harmful. Heroin addiction (assuming clean supply, no overdose) is probably better for your health than most state-sponsored addictions.

It really comes down to which addictions special interest groups lobby the government to eradicate. The modern War on Drugs is largely a product of parent's associations in the 70's complaining to Washington about their kids smoking pot. If there was a massive movement against video games or something, I'm sure they'd become illegal too. The government is a puppet, it does what the most vocal and wealthy people tell it to do.
