Growing in the Dark and Light
    #10107616 - 04/04/09 09:58 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

So I know you want to try for 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark and your light has to be a specific kind to mimic the sunlight.
My question is do the shrooms need complete dark or can you have a normal light on since it doesn't act like sunlight?

It dont really have to be a specific light.  Florescent tubes, or coil lights (like the kind that save electricity) work fine.  They say 6500 is the best color range, but you dont really need to worry about finding that, most regular florescent are close to that.  Complete darkness or close to it is best.  Lights main purpose is to kinda give the shroomies a "cycle" of light and dark.

im sure its not going to kill them
if u have a window put ur shrooms by it.
that way u dont have to worry about having a timer and its actually sunlight. but im guessing u have some kind of 24 hour light around ur growing area? darkness is important because thats when the mushrooms do most of the growing as i understand. if u have a light thats on all the time just block it from shining on the mushrooms.

yea there in my living room so they get darkness but only when i go to sleep or am not at home. I guess I'll just have to put them in another room for 12 hours but it will be kind of annoying switching it all the time maybe I'll set up a timer.

Thanks

You can get a timer for like $5.  I dont really remember where I got mine, I think walmart.  I know it was cheap though, like 5-10 dollars.  It just plugs into the wall, and has little buttons you press down for every 30 mins.  Just push down the hours you want light on, set the time on it, and plug in a lamp...  viola!

i assume u sleep the normal 8 hours or so
so in that case keep them in there
let them keep getting natural sunlight
and i assume ur not using 100 watt bulbs in ur lamps
so its not going to be like the sun blew up in ur living room
u using a tub? just slide it as far as u can in the room at night from the light fixtures when u have them on at night then put them back to their original spot when u wake up. its not like they weigh 100lbs ,

or better yet throw a sheet over the tub making sure not to suffocate the air holes and u wont have to move anything

the 12/12 schedule is a just a guideline.

For optimal performance use a light in the 6500K range.
Keep your 12/12 schedule in line with the fluctuating temperatures(as in don't give it light at night and dark during the day)

Mycelium follows a circadian rhythm.

And if you're going to expose to direct sunlight, don't do more than 5 minutes a day.

The biggest thing to remember though, is that lighting is really the last thing you should be worried about when growing, only once you've completely dialed in your FAE, and RH do you need to really worry about light.
