Chemical sterilization
    #10107185 - 04/04/09 08:33 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

I was wondering if it would be possible to sterilize jars and substrates with chemicals instead of heat. I was thinking using HCl (hydrocloric acid) then neutralize it with NaOH (lye, sodium hydroxide) if you mix the right amounts you get PH no net change in PH by the end, and the reaction makes only water, table salt, and plenty of heat. Between the heat from the reaction and the two caustic chemicals, it should kill anything and leave behind only salt and water. Any advice?

i dont know how well that would work considering the substrate would probably be severely damaged by the end of this and even if it wasnt you would have to figure out a way to remove that extra water/salt from the jar without opening it to contams. the only thing this might work for is removing contams from a jar thats been well... contamed but in that case i just pour chlorox in it and add some water, let sit, then pour out, rinse and put in the washer.
but at least its an original idea
