a few questions about setup and yield expectations
    #10106920 - 04/04/09 07:45 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

Ok, first i'll tell you how my friend has everything setup.
for a humidifier, he is using teh bubbleh setup(http://www.shroomery.org/9789/Teh-Fire-and-4get-Bubbleh-Humidifier) which sounded like a great method. he has that running into his terrarium where he has a rack that he places his cakes on. he is also using a small air pump hose as an exhaust hose. What he wants to know is if he should also put a little water underneath the rack for a little extra humidity or if he should just leave it the way it is.
Also what should he expect in terms of yield per cake?

ah noobs...

yield per cake is based on the strain of the mushroom, the amount of FAE over the period of the fruiting, and the amount of water the cake has available.

I recommend doing the shotgun FC if this is your first time.

use pearlite in the FC make sure RH is 100% and leave it at room temp.

also you can use the bubbleh if you feed it over the cakes, IE get a longer hose or hoses and spray them directly, not just into the chamber.

If it were me... I would take some 1/2" blue tubing and run it to the top of two drip rings with the holes pointed inward, the air pressure will push the fog directly onto the cakes.

shotgun FC??

and yea i have the hose in the middle pointing down over the cakes but what would drip rings do exactly?

and also, what about doing both. perlite and bubbleh

Shotgun Fruiting Chamber.  Its basically a Tupperware tub with a lot of little holes drilled in all sides, and about 5 inches of moist perlite on the bottom.  Make sure it is off the ground, cause it is designed to have the air come up through the perlite, and out through the top or sides, bringing moisture with it.  The mushroom God RogerRabbit came up with it. (or at least he strongly recommends it).

dont worry about the drip rings.

word. i think i'm going to give it a go (i'm going to do both) but the only thing is i don't have a humidity gauge so i have no way of monitoring the humidity.  i think it should be fine, but this is my first attempt so i'm not to worried if it doesn't work PERfectly. the only thing i'm a little worried about is to much moisture in the air. Should i be worried?

no 100% humidity is what you want

use a wet/dry bulb thermometer.

it tells the temp and you can determine humidity by the difference.

Once you push over 100%, you can over-saturate your cakes.  Don't use drips rings, use the shotgun terrarium tek TO THE T.  You can also get a hold of an analog hygrometer from a cigar shop for 6-10$.  Wrap it up in a damp towel for an hour, after that immediately check what it says and then turn the screw in the back to calibrate it to 100%.  Then you can use that.  Make sure you re-calibrate it every couple weeks.

I'm not going to do the shotgun method, I already have all the shit i need for the way i have planned out. i think i'll just go get the wet dry thermometer.

I know I was totally thinking about that when I read it...

dont you know you can form clouds in the fruiting chamber

Reminds me of making clouds in a glass bottle in science class. Elementary school was awesome.

wtf... dude... circulate the humidified air with an air pump, you can run the bubbler after the pump to have it blow the air into the chamber

yea..... that's pretty much exactly how i have it set up and how i've said i have it said up. what i'm trying to prevent is over humidifying the air. i don't want a cloud in there.  so i guess my NEW question would be- if i use the perlite as well as the bubbler (granted i DO have an exhaust hose so stall air doesn't just sit in the chamber), would it get 2 humid?

you need more airflow.

the wet/dry thermometer response was to the guy trying to calibrate the thermometer and crap.

you need a shotgun FC.

if you can dril into the wall of what you have already that will work too.

if its glass then you need a diamond bit.

I have seen the exhaust method but it doesnt produce nearly as much output as a shotgun FC

oh alright.
you think if i put an exhaust hose fan on the end  it would increase airflow enough? if not then yea, i'll just drill some holes in the side

if you took a computer fan and hooked it up directly to the box and have it suck the air out before you bubble it that might work I would stick with drilling holes though, you would probably need a filter on the computer fan as to prevent air flow concentration.
