I noticed one of my cakes in my fc is starting to develop trich. It's at the white bubble stage right now, but I went ahead and moved it into a separate terrarium of its own and poured salt over the infected area. I have a couple questions that I couldn't find the answers for in my searches earlier today. First, should I continue to keep an eye on the cake or should I just throw it away and call it lost? Is it possible that the trich could just go away and the resulting mushrooms that came out of the cake would be perfectly safe to eat? Also, how likely is it that the other cakes were infected given that I placed them all right next to each other to kind of build off the humidity?

Mushroom mycelium will almost never fight off trich - go ahead and toss that cake in a compost pile outside.

RR once said "you can fruit a contaminated cake in your house as long as it's going to be the last cake you ever fruit in that house." Trichoderma especially is not a joking manner. There is little chance the trich will disappear; it will only release sticky spores that can ruin your future grows (not to mention the cakes surrounding it). GENTLY put the cake in a jar and sterilize it to kill the mold, then throw it away and keep the jar. Basically, if you kept the cake, it could very well fruit, but the trich will release spores that will cause future problems. I'd definitely recommend you throw it away as soon as possible. good luck with your other cakes!

Okay, I just threw it out. Thanks for the help.
If I harvested a bunch of fruits from a cake and then found out the cake had a slight case of trich (maybe in it's early stages or in such a small amount that I didn't notice it right away), would the mushrooms be safe to eat?

Absolutely. Trich is present in dirt and is all over onions, potatos, carrots, etc. As long as the mushrooms themselves aren't moldy or rotting, you'll be fine.

I would think so. I don't think trich is toxic. One thing to watch out for is bacteria. It's more a problem with grains and casings, but you should never eat slimy stinky shrooms. (not that I anybody could bring themselves to do it anyway :p) You're fine, it's all cool

mushrooms grown from mould contaminated substrates are fine. Also mycelium doesnt absorb or transfer toxins to mycelium or fruitbodys.
Its usually best just to dump the cake, however, salting the effected area wills stop the spores being spread and should slow the mould down long enough to get 1 flush.
It usually grows back so dump after 1 flush.
Also make sure what you are seing is definatly trich and not bruising. Alot of new cultivators mistake bruisng for mould. Bruising isnt always blue, it can be from a dirty green to a deep blue colour.
Mould will look like coloured sand ontop of your myceliu,. were ass bruising is the colour of the mycelium itself

Ah, well I already threw it out. What I suspected was trich in its early stages was a bunch white bumps that when touched, turned green after a few minutes.

i just checked one of my bulks for the first time. It's covered about 50% with trich. I'm pissed. aha and i learned 2 things
- don't cover your bulk with plastic, use aluminum foil. - don't add water after pasteurization
just bleach bombed my room, probably did a lot of damage to my lungs too

What about mushrooms that have trich spores all over them, are they safe to eat? I have a friend who poured salt on a trich contaminated cake, but apparently that didn't do the trick, and the spores shit all over everything including the fruits that were/are growing from the cake. Should he get rid of everything or continue with the grow and just throw the cake out after the first flush?

If you're really worried about it, you could wipe the spore covered mushroom with 91% isopropyl alcohol, it would evaporate off cleanly. I'm pretty sure it isn't a problem though. The trich variety we all encounter isn't dangerous to humans.
