Use straw, not hay.  Hay is a combination of grasses, weeds, wild flowers, you name it.  If it's growing in the field, the farmer bails it up.  Straw is hollow and has hundreds, if not thousands of passageways in every piece for the mycelium to work through as you can see from the picture below.  It also holds a lOT of water and air, which hay will not.

Use a weed eater or lawnmower to chop it.  Trying to chop enough for a laundry basket or straw log with scissors would blister every one of your fingers. I've used large hedge clippers before, but what a pain in the ass.

That being said, I will say again. I have never had a contam with hay. I don't understand why people say its more likely to contract a contam because something is more nutritious. Its not like a contam controls where it goes... It just floats through the air until it happens to land on your work.

The biggest problem with hay is the seeds that are in it tend to make an ideal habitat for molds.  Pasteurize with lime, to RAISE the pH.  I don't know of anybody who uses gypsum with straw.  Use gypsum with coir, and never try to adjust the coir pH down, because it's already about a pH of 5.  Bacteria is not a contaminant of bulk substrates-Green molds are, and the lower the pH, the greater the chances of trichoderma.

actually Boris, google it, gypsum does not effect PH. I remember being in a long debate where I was on the other side of this issue because RR was quite clear of gypsum's role in PH, but when I researched the matter I found many professional mushroom facilities saying that it had no effect on PH and was mostly important for calcium.

So your likely just over acidifying your substrate. If it's working for you it may be a serious step up as RR suggests using lime while soaking straw, though I don't think it has anything to do with PH. I'm wondering if coffee would work similar to the additive you are using as it is often used with grain prep for similar reasons. I usually drink a pot and give the coffee grounds a second go for the grains. I could likely do this for hay if I did 3 or 4 runs from it. Do you test the PH of the water while soaking the straw/hay?

The bottle says to use 2 drops per gallon. I put like 20 in the amount of water I use to bring the sub to field capacity... I thought Gypsum was Calcium Carbonate, but its Calcium Sulfate. Carbonates are what will neutralize your sub :sorry: Some people use Calcium Carbonate Sand as a Calcium auditive instead of Gypsum.

Well, I don't JUST use straw. My subs are heavy in straw, but also has choir, cow poo, verm, coffee, ect. I get cobweb if I'm not cageful because when it rains real hard my apt ceiling leaks a lil. I'm sure there is all kinds of cobweb myc growing in the attic area, and thats where the AC air runs through. other then that, I never see Trich. I have a $100 Hepa Air purifier in my prep room, and my grow room, I'm sure its helping with sporal contams. Not much I can do about a constant stream of Cobweb myc debris blowing through my AC vents...

Terence McKenna Said:
"We have to create culture, don't watch TV, don't read magazines, don't even listen to NPR. Create your own roadshow. The nexus of space and time where you are now is the most immediate sector of your universe, and if you're worrying about Michael Jackson or Bill Clinton or somebody else, then you are disempowered, you're giving it all away to icons, icons which are maintained by an electronic media so that you want to dress like X or have lips like Y. This is shit-brained, this kind of thinking. That is all cultural diversion, and what is real is you and your friends and your associations, your highs, your orgasms, your hopes, your plans, your fears. And we are told 'no', we're unimportant, we're peripheral. 'Get a degree, get a job, get a this, get a that.' And then you're a player, you don't want to even play in that game. You want to reclaim your mind and get it out of the hands of the cultural engineers who want to turn you into a half-baked moron consuming all this trash that's being manufactured out of the bones of a dying world."
