Distilled water is preferred, however spring or tap water will work. Just boil it for an hour or so. It will reduce in volume a little bit, but you'll be much better off with the peace of mind.

I rinse with tap, then soak in HOT tap. -- if it's not hot, you're likely to get some of the rye seeds sprouting.
No offense here, but don't listen to Frequency on that post at all.

Boil "it" as in the tap water before you use it to soak your rye. I wasn't instructing him to boil his rye. Perhaps I should have worded it differently. I learned not to boil your substrates myself when I turned some WBS into mashed potatoes.

I meant on the distilled water part. There is absolutely no reason to use distilled for soaking grain. As for the boiling, as long as the water is hot, it will work fine. Even just hot to the touch straight from the tap.

Yes, and the mycelium handles all that just fine. The only thing you should be using distilled water for is agar recipes.
I'm backing Shroominit up on this one, tap is perfectly fine.

Yup, I totally forgot about syringes... I rarely ever make them anymore. And I forgot to mention you could use distilled water when doing sterile water pulls via agar's Grain LC tek.

After reading everyone's responses, I kind of wonder what the OP's concern was. If he's worried about contaminants in the water, then it doesn't matter what type of water he's using.... He's eventually going to Pressure Cook the seed in jars right? Did I miss something here?

i dont know that boiling the rye for more than 10-20 minutes (over 10 btw is pushing it) is a good idea, because whats gonna happen if u boil it u are going to end up with a lot of exploded grains. i accidentally boiled my grains for about 10 mins before simmering because i got preoccupied and they have come out great with little grains exploded. u really just want to simmer it because thats whats going to get them to accept the water easier with less trauma to the grain. try letting it just get to the brink of becomming boiling then turn down the heat to let it simmer for 45 minutes. simmering btw is just having the water hot enough so that steam is visibly coming off the surface. also stir them up every so often just so the bottom grains can distribute excess heat(also preventing exploded grains).
