Hummm - your onto a tough one there.  You can't wrap it up or enclose id in a sound proof box for the obvious reasons ((it needs air flow :smirk:)).  The only thing i can think of is to suspend it from something to reduce the resonance you  get if its sitting on a hard surface.

Alternativel buy a quieter one

I forget who it was that drew a diagram to silence them. But you get a board and put two screws on it. Get industrial strength rubberbands and put the air pump suspended in the air between the two screws.

most air pumps make noise by rattleing against the surface that they are on. The easiest way to dampen them that I have found is to place them on top of a dish sponge...this way they get air and dont rattle anything. Oh and make sure it is a clean, dry, (boiled??) sponge or else you are just asking for contams.

Yes you can enclose MOST of them in a shoe box...look at your pump and see if the bottom panel comes off.. If it does, just take the panel off, lay it upside down in the shoe box and make a hole on both sides of the box, run the tube through one side and the power cord out the other filling the excess parts of the hole with polyfill or just cotton swabs...very simple tek and keeps the contams down by pulling in air into the box through the little aera's surounded by the cotton, and dampen's the sound tremendously because itz incased inside a box...

hope this helps!!

Does anyone know if using the airpump for airflow if it is alright to just have passive exits (holes in rubbermaid with polyfill stuffed in) near the bottom and not seal the top part (lid to bucket) of rubbermaid? I am wondering if this is actually working as I had hoped (air coming in throught the bubbler and heavier CO2 diffusing out through the holes in the bottom, independant of any flow coming in.out the top.

Perhaps the air is just coming out of the bubbler and going out the small spaces along the rim of the lid?
