Is this an in vitro pin? (pic)
    #10102299 - 04/03/09 07:31 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

This PF tek BRF jar just reached 100% colonization this morning, about 32 days after inoculation. This is B+ from Sporeworks in regular mouth 1/2 pint Ball jars. I just noticed this little tiny guy... do my eyes deceive me, or is this my very first pin?

The jar has been kept between 72 and 78 degrees, holes uncovered, on my dresser. I find it hard to believe that it could be getting enough fresh air to start pinning, but maybe I'm wrong.

I know early pinning is cause for concern, but the jar looks and smells fine, and it did just reach 100% colonization.

My plan was to wait a week before birthing - is this still a good idea? Should I be worried at all? I've been following the PF tek from RR's video to the T, but I didn't expect this. Comments/advice appreciated!

If he can survive being in a jar, im sure 24 hours of water won't hurt him one bit. Good luck!

I'd give it at least a few more days before birthing and dunk and roll.  You don't really want your pins to come one at a time.  Let the mycelium consolidate its hold on the substrate and you'll get a much better flush.

this is definitely good advice...  Looks like you used a full pint sized jar.  I did that myself a few times, and got pins near the top before the thing was fully colonized.  If you just wait it out, your final pinset will be nicer...

Great, that's what I wanted to do. You've given tons of great advice on this forum and this is no exception - thank you RR

Actually these are half-pint jars, they just have regular mouths instead of wide, which I couldn't find unfortunately. I'm kicking myself for that now, since wide mouth jars would have finished colonizing much sooner due to the smaller surface area. So I'll hunt down some wide mouth jars, and in the meantime, I'll give this jar a couple days

Thanks everyone!
