Monotub Question
    #10102769 - 04/03/09 09:41 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

Hello all. So in the room pictured you can see the inset cupboards that I want to use as fruiting chambers. I want to do a manipulated "monotub" in these cupboards and I'm going to be doing some experimenting, but I have one question concerning gas exchange (or FAE whatever it's called). On a monotub every side has the holes with polyfil. If I turned each of these into a fruiting chamber (each section) could I bore a hole in the middle panel divider and fill with polyfil? In a way, connecting all the monotubs?

The reason I want to do this is because this room is literally wall to wall with these storage spaces and I would love to utilize them. Any input helpful.

Oh yea... dimensions for eaech of those is 26" long x 20.5" tall x 15" deep.

Just go purchase a 27 quart sterlite tub for each hole there. I don't think you can actually turn the cabinet/wood into a fruiting chamber.  There are issues with the wood growing mold and bacteria.

I'm going to line it with plastic and I don't plan on buying tubs... there are about 15 of these and I don't want to spend $100 dollars on tubs. Basically do the holes with polyfil have to access fresh air or moving air?

You're very lucky... I'd use two for inc. an three for fruits and get a rotation going. You could possibly bore some holes, then seal with oil based paint, and run some pvc piping through for a cool mist set up. That would be pretty amazing...but a monotub is always a surefire way.

15??? Well  :headbanger:

If your gonna line it throw up some premade plexiglass boxes, with silicone or something similiar...

Kinda like those loonies that sit in a box well lions and bears attack.

I am just telling you from some experience keep it simple, I bought those tubs on special for 3.99 each from walmart.  They are so simple.  I mean there is nothing wrong with a little ingenuity, but you may find yourself pulling your hair out.  Check out the link below just breeze through it and take a look at the pictures.

Yea it's a nice area for sure... behind Jimi tapestry is my fridge, TiT, and glovebox...

benzeb... if I ran PVC through for mist what could I use for air exchange? If I've read correctly I need plenty of air exchange for fruiting so how would I solve this considering only one of the sides would be exposed?

damion - I probably should take your advice but I'm kind of stubborn. And besides I've always been a DIY kind of guy who enjoys making 10 minute projects take all day just for the satisfaction of doing something different. I'm going to do one monotub so that I can say I've done it... maybe after I complete this project I'll scrap it all for simple monos, but I got to try...

Traditionally, what method of air circulation is used for a green house? If I setup two PVC lines running between these boxes with the bottom PVC line blowing air out and top line pulling air in would this work? Stick a HEPA on the "in" air pump?

no need for hepa for fruiting chambers.  Mono tubs usually have a passive fresh air exchange..  Meaning my mono tubs sit in a room with the ceiling fan on.  So the fan constantly moves the air in the room providing fresh air for the tubs.

OK... so say 6 holes at the top with a 1/2" bit should suffice for air circ?

You got me at a time of good random thought...what a bought a pressure latch? Just wanna see you try that...like air stone bub,in bottom below pearls, and waste gates attached with pressure springs. I dare you to accomplish this...24 hour air pump/or cool mist connect with crazy piping set up, to sealed plexi or wutev. When pressure builds they release CO2 out near the pearlite...or some weak pressure cooker valves?!?!?! I'm patenting this shit now!

edit: kinda like a forced fresh air cool mist mix, maybe?

i know a  about to experiment with something similar ...using thats same green latch basket from walmart except its a 105 quart he's is going  take rye berries and spawn it to wheat star and make it in a monotub but from what we hear wheat monotubs need a lot of GAE so he is going to make the 2 105 quarters into shotgun monotub/terrarium  and have lots of holes so it can breathe ..in one tum ill have an ultrasonic mister and in the other i wont ..but i will only mist like 5 min every 2 hours for sake of not over saturating the Sub

Couldn't you just recirculate the condensed water back to the main water tank, via gravity feed...since the available area is located fairly high.
