cold shock immeadiatly after casing?
    #10098480 - 04/03/09 12:42 AM (15 years, 9 months ago)

Hi,
I'm about to case a tray of straw that is colonized with Psilocybe mexicana jalisco.

I understand that they should be cold shocked for a week in the fridge. But should the cold shock occur immeadiatly after casing, or should I wait until the mycelia crawl up through the casing layer?

don't worry about cold shocking tropical species.

Really?
Makes sense... though I have read that many people do cold shock P. mexicana.

In general then, what is the answer to whether cold shocking should be done immeadiatly after casing?

Cubes are a tropical species, cold temperatures are not a fruiting signal to them. It don't work. All it does is slows your mycelium's metabolism temporarily.

However you should dunk (often done while cold shocking) before casing. Obviously the casing would wash off while dunking.

By Cubes do you mean P. cubensis? I am not growing cubensis, I am growing P. mexicana. Those are different, correct?

I am casing a bed of colonized hay. I am not fruiting from cakes.

I don't understand. P. cubensis and P. mexicana are clearly different species of the same genus. They look different and are genetically distinct species.

Are you saying that both P. cubensis and P. mexicana are called "cubes"?

I can't believe the amount of misinformation floating around here. P. mexicana is NOT a cubensis, not even CLOSE.

This is P. mexicana:

And just like P. cubensis it is a tropical species and does not benefit from cold shocking.

ahh sorry I thought it was p.cube. Mexican variant not P mexicana. Either way it's from Mexico where there is no natural cold shock so it is not a part of growing procedure for this reason.
