Not sure if these stores are popular, or even exist outside of Texas (Cause were a bunch of redneck hicks compared to other states), but I often spot western clothe store type places with bails of straw stacked around there front doors of there store as a decoration. I just drive up after store hrs, and chunk one in my trunk and jet off... Some times there not straw, but are hay... I have had no problems with hay. Some people say not to use it, but it works the same for me.

I'm sure they don't care if one bail of straw/hay come up missing once a year lol... One lasts me forever.

Well, I take a handful and run some scissors through it every 4-5 inches or so till I have my portion I want all in 5-6 inch pieces. Then I throw it in my blender by the generous handful, and it comes out like this:

If you just put a generous handful in at a time, it will chop more easily and faster. If you get impatient and start putting too much in, you'll need to put one hand on top of the canister and shake the shit out of it while its chopping to loosen it up and let it fall down into the blades. Putting too much usually ends up taking longer in the long run cause it gets clumped up, and you spend too much time shaking it like crazy. Each time you chop a portion, dump it off into a different bowl/container, rinse/repeat till you have it all chopped up.

You can chop it slightly more coarse then I like to chop mine. Most people like there straw real long and coarse. When its chopped small it adds plenty of aeration, and its ezer to work with. My subs generally look like this:

40% Straw/Hay
20% Cow Poo
20% Choir
10% Verm
5%  Gypsum
5%  Coffee (Straight out of the can, un-spent)

And when I bring this to Field capacity, I alter the waters PH with some of this:

It says 2 drops per gallon of water, I usually put like 20  Because Gypsum will neutralize the PH very easily, so I gotta put allot to overpower the gypsum. Myc grows allot faster/prefers a more acidic substrate. For an opposite example, thats why people put lime in casings. Lime is an alkaline increase, and it discourages myc from colonizing the casings.

Check craigslist for your area for straw.  Farmers will advertise there and many times have signs in the countryside for straw for sale.

thanks for the advice on hay guys. I'm gona try some with some now. I was always discouraged from trying it because people said it would contaminate my work.

Have you considered using more coir, rather than verm in your sub? Coir seems to hold way more water than verm and with the straw the sub should be quite airy, though I am no expert on how airy a substrate should be.

Choir doesn't have good aeration alone. When I first ventured from PF tech to bulk, I used choir/verm/coffee. It took like a fucking month for that shit to colonize cause choir kinda compacts down on it self and doesn't leave very generous airy pathways for myc to tunnel through. Adding straw makes a hell of a difference... Hell, 100% straw alone is a badass sub... My sub mix now-days fully colonizes in 7-8-9-10 day range. An Acidic PH level in your subs makes a hell of a difference too. Not to mention weeds out allot of bacterial contams. Bacteria need basically a neutral PH substrate to thrive. Using gypsum is like taking a Tums, neutralizes your PH. Don't get me wrong, Mushrooms need calcium/minerals to produce Oxalic Acids/Calcium Oxalate. Thats why I counter those neutralizing minerals with:

people say its ezer to contract a contam with Hay because it has allot higher nutritional value apposed to all the low nutritional value subs like corn cob, choir, straw, ect. People compare hays nutritional value to that of grain. Your mushrooms get most of there nutrient from the grain spawn you use, not the actual bulk sub. Too bad grain doesn't hold water very well, (drys out easily) and doesn't retain water like most bulk substrates.

That being said, I will say again. I have never had a contam with hay. I don't understand why people say its more likely to contract a contam because something is more nutritious. Its not like a contam controls where it goes... It just floats through the air until it happens to land on your work.

well thats not really the way to go with wheat..the best thing is start by watching Roger Rabbit's video on straw logs/laundry basket tech ..it teaches you how to spawn to bulk , i have a friend that is going to use wheat straw as a substrate in a monotub and he wants to learn everything he can before he does it so i am helping him out:P you get alot of weight from straw and its a cheap substrate and i hear it make the shroomies big and potent
