Well the best tip I can give you is to find out what your target mushrooms are. Then learn everything you can about them. Then look for them every time you get a chance.

Poop.... and more poop. A pasture with lots of poop is a good place to start. Cow manure being the best obviously, I don't know much about it, But I DO Believe many of the "local" farmers, For the most part, Feed the livestock a grain that contains anti fungi material, Don't know if it's tru fax or not, But I have a field on the boarder of my backyard filled with cows daily, And Haven't seen ANY fungi action, But no more than 50yards away my garden is thriving with fungi.

Permission to be on a cow pasture is your best bet, Cuz you wouldn't have to park on the side of the road or a random parking lot a mile from where you want to go. And you could roam around free with no worries.

other than that, hunt at your own risk!

QFT.

Ideally if I was planning on hunting in pastures (preferably cow pastures) I'd be looking for "Psilocybe cubensis" (Dependant on habitat / state / country )

IMO That would be your biggest / best find in a cow pasture.

Just do a lot of research on that strain like danny was saying.

And a friendly tip, If you are interested in what shroomies:mushroom2: are active in your area, Give  http://www.shroomery.org/8461/Which-psilocybin-mushrooms-grow-wild-in-my-area ;  a gander.  I just found as much info as I could on every active genus known in my state, Just in case I run into one of them in the wild

The fact that you are finding Panaeolus antillarum means that you are in or near the correct habitat for cubes and copes.  Keep checking more fields more often.

Not P. coprophila.  Looks more like Panaeolus papilionaceus to me but it could also be antillarum.

Several different pigments are used to create the black color.  One of them absorbs red light; if this pigment is missing then you get red spores.
