fruiting isn't going well??
    #10095891 - 04/02/09 05:20 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

History:

Using PF Tek

Took about a month for mycelium to take over jars. I thought they were supposed to start pinning in the jars before transferring them to a fruiting chamber. 7/7 Jars no contamination. Waited an extra 2-3 weeks for pinning to start.

I transferred the 7 cakes to a big plastic bin. Covered the bottom with moist napkins. Put a few sheets of plastic wrap on top. Air tight.

Current status: One cake has a big mushroom growing out of it, with several smaller ones starting. Another cake is somewhere between pinning and producing mushrooms. The rest... nada. The mycelium is spreading from the cakes into the moist napkins. The ones that are growing well have spread more. Some of them just look awful. Have not started pinning or anything. It's been about 2 weeks they've been in there.

Are these failed cakes? What can I do to get the best out of them? I've been considering dunking? And freezing? I don't know. This is the first batch I've ever grown. I'm hoping all 7 will produce.

You need perilite, napkins are not going to keep any kind of humidity. I'm amazed you even got 1 shroom out of those cakes.

Hmmmm... shouldn't be air tight. Fresh air is the big pinning trigger. Drill holes on all sides and fan the cakes a lot.

The napkins have some "nutrients" in them that the mycelium will try to consume.  You need perlite like c1dh3d said.  What are your conditions, temp and RH???

wo! I'm surprised you got any mushies from that. You need FAE (Fresh Air Exchange) and some perlite. Did you read up on it at all before you started?

I'm no expert but...

Are there holes in your plastic tub? If not, look up shotgun FC. It's easy to make. You just need to drill a bunch of holes and fan and mist it a few times a day.

And you should put some perlite in there. Napkins probably don't hold enough water and seem like they'd get nasty after not too long.
You should be able to find perlite at Lowes or Home Depot or a place like that and if not you can definitely get it online. It's not too expensive.

whre are you getting your info from!!

Jeez last time i heard napkins used in a fruitng chamber was a year ago and everyone ssaid that you cant replace perlite with napkins.

www.mushroomvideos.com

and watch all 4 pf tek videos.

You need a container with 1/4 inch holes drilled in all 6 sides with 4-5 inches of well drained perlite for your fruiting conditions.

Mycelium will consume paper. its also rubbish for maintain high humidity.

I guess I was just improvising a bit too much. I didn't realize that the specificity of the conditions was important.

So what do you suggest I do for now? When I get perlite, should I just transfer them to a perlite environment? Or is there a middle step of sorts?

just put the perlite in a strainer rinse and strain it well, put you're cakes on some tinfoil or jar lids. fan and mist often and you'll be fine !
