Oxygen in Casing
    #10095922 - 04/02/09 05:25 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

Is there any tangible difference between having polyfill filled holes in the tub sides at the top and bottom, or fanning 2-3 times daily for fruiting?  Or are there other safe ways of introducing oxygen to the environment?

Well the nice thing about polyfill is you can set a fan in a room, set and forget your tubs in there, and you have constant gas exchange without lifting the lid and displacing all that moisture over and over all day long.  So that would be the advantage, you can get air exchange w/ out disturbing your climate (humidity).

Obviously you gotta use your head and put an oscillating fan to where it's putting a bit of + pressure against the polyfill holes, enough for air exchange to take place.  Not so close it's blowing it dry, and not so far away that nothing is happening either.

Makes sense.  I have another quick specific question about the Casing.  I understand the top casing is just for moisture, would it hurt to add some manure and straw into the mixture?

you don't want nutrients in your casing layer.

In tubs as long as the air is circulating somewhat that should be good,a casing layer holds moisture close to the surface but I don't think it is needed in a sealed tub because the humidity stays in there unless you are opening it to fan..and as mentioned above do not let the fan directly be drying out whats inside
