From Spawn to Coir

Hello All,
I have so far had one successful grow spawning a pf cake to coir. I have been trying to do so again with grain spawn, but have run into much trouble with contams. I have several quart jars of wbs colonizing now (from an LC of Amazon strain), and I plan to try again spawing to coir. Hoping I've learned from my mistakes I plan to place 1/2 of the quart jar of spawn completely covering the coir, as recommended in Oatman's Tek, and I want to use the minimum amount of coir that would still add the nutrients necessary. Would a 25% rate of coir and coffee grounds to colonized spawn still be enough to gain from the benefits of spawning to coir? Any other comments? Does it sound like a good plan? Thanks in advance.

It would be a very safe procedure. If nothing else, the coir and coffee would help diversify the nutrient base.
Even a 1:1 ratio is still very safe though... That's what I would suggest using.
One thing you have to be very careful about when using grain spawn: don't beat up your mycelium!
I really do not like the teks that have you break the grain up in a bag with your hands.... when I do this, it tends to kill a lot of mycelium. Instead, I prefer to break it apart in a bowl (wiped down with isopropyl alcohol first) using a spoon. It seems to pull the mycelium apart without killing nearly as much of it.
Since I've been doing that, I've had had much better mycelium recovery rates and less contamination problems.

Thanks for your reply. Do you find that the same is true when shaking the colonizing grain jars? I just shook a couple of jars yesterday, and I recently had to throw out some jars which I noticed had begun to contaminate a day or two after shaking them. Do you think it's because I killed the mycelium?

When I shake, I try to shake it just enough to break up the mycelium a few times and nothing more. Shaking too hard can cause impact trauma on the mycelium, yes....
Are you using either tyvek or a filter disk on the grain jars?

I'm using tyvek under the cover for the first time. Earlier I punched holes in the tyvek, but it has micopore tape on it.

I reccomend putting a frosting layer over the coir, like a 1/3 of a quart or less.. can only help

i recomend only shaking a jar once. that's when it has reached about 30% colonized.
i spoon mine out, then crumble with the coir.
Make sure if re-using any containers. Wash out thoroughly as well as the lid!
Good Luck!

I have always broken up my spawn with my hands with no noticeable problems but I like your idea, ill try it soon

Thanks for your input. I hope to begin spawning sometime next week. I see signs of my jars coming back after shaking. Interestingly though, I made a new LC from my same master which is a couple of months old now, and this particular LC took off really fast. 2-3 days and it was full of myc. I inoculated some more jars with that and they're colonizing quite fast. I think they may overtake the ones I inoculated 4 days earlier from a different lc I made from the same master. The faster lc was made with honey and the first one with Karo.

i have had that happen.
if your jars are not colonizing in about 10 days. Then the mycellium is not at full potential and usually weak, or will stall.

Is there any point in innoclating the slower jars a second time with the faster mycelium?

Oatman Im going to attempt your method. When you break the colonization down for casing, how much do you break it down? I don't want to hurt the mycelium.

i try and break it up into individual kernels.
I stick the clumps of wbs between my hands and "do the karate kid move" (and I don't mean the one where he does a jumpkick!)

I just had a vision of Oatman throwing wbs in the air and drop kicking it...Its been a long day.
