I have used miracal grow perlite for all my PFtek grows and it doesnt effect anything as long as you put a foil/screen/lid berrier under your cake. just rince b4 you use it, which you do anyway and everything will work just fine.

Uh, had to tell you guys: Don't use sulphiric acid on your cakes, it will burn them. I tried it once and it was a very bad idea.

I would think in the name of safety and sterility that you would boil the perlite rinse well, boil, than rinse well again. Maybe then it could be reused. I always use just a square of foil to sit my cakes on.

you dont need to boil the pearlite...or the water you are putting on the pearlite thats just stupid
you are introducing a FULLY COLONIZED cake into non sterile conditions (you are fanning air in and putting water on these things), rinse the pearlite under tap water, put it in the chamber, put your cakes on aluminum foil, done.
watch the damn RR videos

potatonet, I advise you to think before you post.
They were talking about removing nutrients from the perlite, which RR does not have because he does not use the "Miracle Gro" brand. He uses much more coarse stuff that I think he said he found at a nursery.
(Also, for the sulphiric acid, yeah I put it on everything organic, just for fun. It basically depletes the moisture and is highly acidic, this tends to cause an exothermic reaction thus literally and figuratively "burning" things.)

A new one? That is pretty damn far from a new one. When mycelium comes into contact with something that is very PH imbalanced, for example, hydrated lime which is very basic, this can burn the mycelium. A chemical burn, not a flame or heat burn obviously.
I meant a new one for me. I had no idea...
Oh alright man, no worries then sorry

Shroominit,
It doesn't matter, they were talking about sterility.
the mushrooms are not coming into contact with the pearlite and the nutrients aren't going to simply evaporate in a 100% humid environment.
please read who I was replying to before telling me to think about what I am posting.

So he used the wrong word in his post, don't have to be a dick to me about it.
He was talking about washing and reusing perlite, if you have had ANY contamination at all in your FC, I would definitely do more than just adding water to rehydrate the perlite.
I don't care how colonized your cake is, if you drop it into a trich-spore infested FC, it will contaminate before it flushes, or at least before the second flush.

this is why you alcohol wash your FC between flushes and replace the pearlite...
they sell it in 4 cubic foot bags for a reason...

you could probably do some kind of pearlite pressure cook thing if you really felt the need to re-use the pearlite.
it costs me 20 dollars for 4 cubic feet, which is about 8 flushes with my FC
PS. Sorry if I was a

Not saying you should do it and I agree that if you have some lying around, just use that. If you're bent on reusing it though, you should do something to get it clean... baking it dry is the best way in my opinion.

I've used Miracle-Gro Perlite in my FC and have had no problem. I rinsed it well under the faucet with a strainer, but didn't sterilize it.
According to the bag the perlite also contains Nitrogen, Phosphate, and Soluble potash (I don't know much chemistry, but those all sound like stuff that should be rinsed out......and also woodchips...the bag doesn't mention that, but there was definately woodchips mixed in (not a lot, I was able to pick them all out by hand).
I've had no problems though, just don't let the cakes/mushies touch the perlite. I know thats been said a lot already, but I'm just agreeing.

yeah those are just fertilizer components.
baking it dry sounds like a fabulous idea...
put it in a big pan and set it on 400 for an hour or so...
I like that...

I accidentally picked up 2 bags of Miracle-Gro Perlite, not realizing that they actually went and added plant food to the damn stuff. It's good to see that people have used it in their grows with no problems, so thanks to everybody who commented on this. I'm trying to figure out whether to use mine or not. It's good to know that the Miracle-Gro perlite isn't completely horrible, in case I can't find another brand before I need to get my FC ready.
So I'll definitely rinse it really well, but I wonder what the best method would be to get as much of the plant food out as possible? Maybe rinsing it really well with a bleach solution and then baking the moisture off... would that be overkill? I refuse to lose my first batch of shrooms to Miracle-Gro :P

just wash it...
its soluble nutrient anyways...
the bag I got was from a farm supply store (find one local and get some, I think it was aztec perlite company that made the stuff)
