Miracle Gro perlite is the only stuff I've been able to find. You have to wet the perlite anyways, so I would think that would wash anything away. I haven't had any issues.

The miracle grow added to the perlite can burn the mycelium, don't use it unless you have no other option. As long as your cakes don't touch the perlite, you should be fine though.

I use the Miracle Grow perlite in my shotgun FC, and it works just fine. Nothing needed to be done besides soaking it in water anyways.

A new one? That is pretty damn far from a new one. When mycelium comes into contact with something that is very PH imbalanced, for example, hydrated lime which is very basic, this can burn the mycelium. A chemical burn, not a flame or heat burn obviously.

Ummmm, ok kidd. You are "talkin without knowing" dumbass. If one were to put their cakes into contact with miracle grow perlite (given that it has miracle grow liquid plant food in it) it could very well damage the mycelium. If you want to test it and try it out go ahead. I am not saying that it WOULD burn the myc im just saying why risk it when it could, and also when it could encourage algal growth on the perlite etc.

from my understanding the cakes or wtv shouldn't be directly touching the perlite in the first place, so it should be fine

Algal growth? Come on. How the hell would algae ever start growing on perlite? Algae doesn't just appear anywhere food is present and particularly not on perlite in a terrarium inside of your house.

Are you serious? High humidity, plant food on perlite, sunlight, that would grow algae. check it http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/9171387#9171387

-Yeah, I don't let anything touch perlite either. So I don't see it burning the myc if it isn't touching anyway barney guy.

Barney guy is right guys....
sorry to say =-/
miracle grow pearlite DOES have fertilizer in it as an enrichment for plants.
and yes nutrients plus sunlight plus moisture = algae
I do have to say that I will be returning my pearlite to the store that I bought it at and going to the farm supply place for a 4 cubic foot bag of dense pearlite

you could just flush it with water for awhile, that would most likely get all of the added chemicals out. then again, i have no idea how they make MG perlite so i could be wrong.

its probably like barkey said.
they soak it in miracle grow liquid nutrient.
most nutrients are clear when being made, they add color to them to make them seem more appealing
