Fruiting chamber humidity % for casings.
    #10093553 - 04/02/09 11:22 AM (15 years, 9 months ago)

Hi compadres,

I am fruting WBS cased with 50pete/50verm mix in plastic trays. In my martha-tek style fruting chamber I have 2 humidity readers, one is from a reptile store and another is from walmart (national geographic branded). At the top of the chamber the humidity measures 91% (walmart) and at the bottom 99% (reptile).

Last year I tried to fruit similar trays in a tupperware filled with soaked perlite. The humidity in the tupperware was 99% at all times and it never fruited, instead it got... lay-over? (maybe it's called something else), the myce just hardened on top. I believe it was caused either by too high RH or by some fertalizer pebbles in my pete moss.

Questions:
Is the RH in my martha too high and could this cause problems for my casings? I can either let it stay at 99% and hope they fruit or go out and buy an electonic timer so I can be more precise with my humidifier and then bring down the humidity.

I have alot of time invested in these precious casings and I'd hate to lose them

The RH should be fine, might wanna try and keep it around 90% if you can.  It is called "Overlay" and you should be patching the white spots of mycelium as they come through the casing layer.  This helps the substrate grow evenly and give you even flushes.  If your casing is getting hard, that means it isn't getting enough moisture.  Hope this helps.

Humidity is normally higher near the top of a greenhouse than the bottom in my experience.  You never mentioned the method you used to calibrate your hygrometers.

Hi, thanks for the responses. I have not calibrated and don't know how to. I am not even sure that the ones I own are capable of being calibrated. I found it quite hard to find a decent hydrometer.

It seems like its better to be too humid than too dry, so I'll leave my mechanical timer at 50% on instead of dropping it to 33% on. At 33% the RH drops to the 60's then climbs back to mid 80s.

Maybe it's time for a new hydrometer

maybe just me but i prefer too dry than humid, you can replace moisture quickly but if it gets too moist it's hard to dry it out without time.(or a blow dryer, joking!) and when i stay at 99% + for too long green meany stops by for a visit, due to the excess water that eventually forms over 99. i would rather 70-80 over 99+ because you could manually assure proper hydration via casing layer.

and ive heard from a realiable source that casings will fruit at ambient humidity levels as long as they're maintained(ie. mistings, etc.)

my cheapo digi hygrometer doesn't have calibration, i don't think many cheap ones will, but there are a few methods or tests to assure its working properly.

what are you supplying humidity with?

Humidity is supplied with a cool mist style humidifier. I already had green meany stop by to mess with my last crop. =(

the best combat for contams is FAE and no standing water. the cool mist should supply plenty of fresh air as long as it's either pumped in from outside or there are lots of slits in the outside of your Martha. just make sure it's not slinging water into your tubs cuz greany is thirsty.
