Does this look infected? (with pic)
    #10093680 - 04/02/09 11:47 AM (15 years, 9 months ago)

On 2 of my colonizing BRF jars, about 5 mm below the dry verm barrier, are a spot of teal (it looks blueish grey). they are smaller than a match head, and do not appear to be growing.

Tek: RR Brf tek
Jars: 1/2 pint regular mouth
Room temp: Mid to upper 70s

1) What is this, is it a contam, and what can be done about it? One jar is 95% colonized and the other is about 50%ish.

2) I was thinking of cutting off affected areas with a hot knife when i birth, assuming they are still match head size. Good idea or bad?

3) If this cake is infected to a small degree, but i cut off contaminated areas, could I still make a backup sporeprint?

Greatly appreciate any answers.

Q1: could be a contam and honestly kinda looks like one.  On the other hand, it could be mushy myc growing in a dehydrated environment (is all this grey stuff by dry verm layer?) because myc blues a little sometimes when not enough H2O is there, it's rare though from my experience.

Q2: prob. good idea but seperate it anyway from  others while fruiting

Q3: you could if it fruits but the risk of contam spores on print is higher.  This would only be true if the contam had started producing marure spores though.
