Extremely slow bag of colonising straw
    #10092593 - 04/02/09 06:48 AM (15 years, 9 months ago)

I have a bag of pasteurised straw that I had spawned a BRF cake into on the 12th of March and it's STILL colonising! At first nothing seemed to be happening and it took a while to begin but you can see it is slowly but surely making it's way around the bag.

I've seen people here say if it isn't done in 10 days then it's probably not going to finish. Is this unheard of to have a straw bag colonise in over a month? This thing doesn't have any nasty contam smells at all. Just that earthy mycelium scent. What the hell is wrong w/ this bag?

Too little spawn, is my guess. I have no idea how big your bag is.
Also mycelium should smell mushroomy, not 'earthy.' But, if it smells healthy as you said, it's probably fine. Just double check for mold

I used the wrong word. It smells exactly how mycelium should smell- mushroomy.

I think you guys might be on to something. I spawned a tiny 1/2 pint BRF cake to a rather large ball of mycelium the mass of approximately 2 basketballs. It's taking a good goddamned long time and I think it may be a slow colonising strain.

What spawn ratio do you guys typically use?
