thermal death for SRA mycelium?
    #10092221 - 04/02/09 03:47 AM (14 years, 11 months ago)

Which is the maximal temperature Stropharia Rugoso-Annulata can stand?
We buried a wooden cage of a square meter in the garden, filled with woodchips, inoculated and covered with plastic; in the summer it could reach 40-45 degrees Celsius inside. :stoned:

You definitely don't want your temps to get up to to 45C.  I know from bread making that yeast dies off between 45-50C.

GGMM lists the optimal spawn run temperature for SRA at 70-80F (21-27C).  If you have problems with it heating up, your best bet here is to mulch your bed well, and put in plants that shade your bed like pumpkins or summer squash.  The SRA mycelium will definitely benefit the plants!

In Holland ?  I doubt it.  You only wish your weather were that good.

If true, the heat would be bad for it, if not kill it.  You could shade it somehow if it were in direct sun.  The ground will also help to keep it cool.

If the woodchips were not in a box, or the box were open on top, there would be no problems about it getting that warm.

Why the box ?

Do not be arguing with the Dutch about gardening.

That plastic cover will cause it to get hotter than necessary. I also wonder if the mycelium will get enough air. I'd replace the plastic with a layer of straw.

I'm Dutch too.  That's divine right to argue about gardening.

It sounds like a very orderly garden.  Are you sure it's not in ...Germany.

My Grandma's German.  I can say that.:)

We had a layer of plastic on the bottom, now pulled away and replaced by sand, new culture has to be started

So actually i have the same question and am also from NL lol

however last year we broke records with 41C in summer.

i can consider the issue about keeping a raised bed of wine caps wet over the upcoming summer but i dont want it to die or some contam taking over cause the wine caps get so messed up.

its the end of may so is it really unwise to start a raised bed with straw in almost pure shade - its in a pretty wild garden, i think there are tempering factors.

more generally even: any experiences/advice on starting a raised bed this time of year, like should i really wait until the peak of summer has passed and then do it while the colonization temp should be pretty optimal without that much risk of overheating again?

i know the diplomatic answer is probably that its safer to do it later in the year as long as you finish decent colonization before winter i guess, but anything else plz - like about the risks from experience?

thnx
