white spots on bridgesii
    #10085117 - 04/01/09 02:26 AM (15 years, 1 day ago)

I have recently noticed white blotches forming on my Trichocereus bridgesii. It started out as white spots that were there when I bought it at a nursery and now it has turned in to an almost yellow color and are bumps all around it. Is this some kind of fungal disease caused by overwatering or lack of sun or what? It has created pups that look great but have the same white coloring in some places but are not nearly as bad. Any help would be mucho appreciated.

Post a few pics and maybe go into more depth about your watering habits, fertilizer, and other environmental factors.

When you got it from the nursery was it in full sun?  Did you slowly acclimate it to the sun? I found this little tid bit from another site.

[Sunburn] Sunburn: A change in the appearance in the plant due to too much exposure to the sun. The entire plant epidermis will turn a whitish, yellowish or reddish-brown color. In extreme cases, a sunburned plant may become sensitive to other diseases.

As mentioned, this disease is caused by too much light exposure. Typically, this occurs when rapidly bringing plants used to artificial light into intense natural light. Epiphytic cacti and seedlings are especially sensitive to sunburn. To prevent, a cactus should be gradually introduced to more light over a period of time. Plants should be placed into the shade, then into partial sun, and finally into full sun; this process may take one month. If you notice signs of sunburn, move the plant temporarily back into the shade. Also, sunburn is exasperated by hot weather and lack of water, so, make sure the plant is properly watered.
Don't know if it sounds right or not hope it helps

Hey thanks blow_in, that bit about the sunburn sounds exactly like what is happening.

When I got it from the nursery it was outside but definitely not in the full sun but it still had the white spots on it. Now I keep it indoors next to a window that gets plenty of sunlight. I am in San Diego and we have had some hot days here already so I guess that it just got burnt as well as me not watering it enough. Gave it some water last night and turned it around so I will see what happens now. I'll post some pics tonight.

There is a lot stuff out there that says they like full sun but when I lived in California I made sure that when the sun was its strongest they were shaded its all about slowly acclimating them.Good luck I'm sure they will bounce back!
