quick question about cubes and grain spawn
    #10090588 - 04/01/09 09:49 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

i've been looking around and can't quite get a clear answer.

my friend has been looking at stepping up from cakes to do large bulk grows. the longer he has been searching the more he learns and the more interested he becomes. although as much as he has learned there is one thing he can't quite put his finger on, what to use for grain spawn for cubes.

reading up on grain spawn, he's noticed alot of people say that wild bird seed is good, rye grass seed is also good, but rye berries works best. though every time he reads up on it, they mention sclerotia producing fungi, and most if not all, are non sclerotia producers.

so enough blabbering from me, my question is: "can you use rye berries, rye grass seed, or wild bird seed to spawn cubes? if not, what should i spawn them to?"

thanks guys, my friend will really appreciate the answer.

I'm not really familiar with the difference between rye seed and rye berries, but Rye grains and WBS will work.

BTW rye grains are way better than WBS, much nicer to handle, but also more expensive.

rye grass and rye berries are completely different.
if you can get a hold of it, use rye berry/grain(samething)
i get mine at whole/natural food stores
if you call around and ask for it use both names because not everyone knows they r one in the same. anykind of whole grain works. i suggest avoiding wbs, imo it sucks ungodly ass. way too much work involved in its preparation. and if you are patient order something like a mycobag from themadseason or another sponsor of your choice. i was previously giving some 1 else advice along with some one with a lot more experience and we agreed going bulk is a lot easier than people are understood to believe. the pf tek with brf/verm is more of an economical decision for people without the means to buy the equipment for bulk. i believe doing cakes is probably more work than bulk in the long run with less results. its basically an apprenticeship where you have to do all the hard stuff to earn your wings.

Any grain will work, they will just have different nutrional content.  I personally like WBS over rye berries because of the variety of nutrition and finer grains.  Rye,wheat berries are nice though because they dry off the outside moisture faster in the preparation than WBS or WBS/cracked corn.  I would say WBS+cracked corn has the highest nutrition with more fat and protein than rye, but takes a while to dry off outside moisture.

Evolution is Lamarckism in disguise.  Adaptation never creates a new species or trait, but rather the new species/trait always existed within the parent DNA until circumstances allowed it to be activated.  For instance, every wolf has the DNA for poodles, but that DNA would never be revealed without man selectively breeding for it.
