Some noob Q's

I plan on cultivating some mushrooms, to help reduce some of my waste. I live in Iowa. I was wondering What strain's would be best for me?
Which Oyster strain Is the best tasting?
Which ones can survive frost?
Can you make an Agar with coffee grounds?
What is the difference between a culture slant and a culture syringe?
Any help will be appreciated. TY.
Does coffee grounds and paper need to be sterilized or can pastuerized work?

Agar has nothing to do with coffee grounds.. IT is a petri dish with agar and water used to grow mycellium for later use in a substrate.
Culture slant is usually a pyrex slant with mycellium growing in it. You use a syringe to pull the myc into it and inject into a substrate.
As for which mushroom I'm not sure do some searches!

You want to pasteurize any bulk substrates.
This includes straw, coffee, paper products, etc.

Would you get more culture in a slant or a syringe? I mean if you buoght it from sporeworks?
Also I know that agar Is the growing medium used to isolate and or grow out mycelium, howevert people usually add malt exctract or potato dextrose. I have read a post that uses Honey and dehydrated potato flakes mixed in with it. I was wondering if you could acheive the same effects with coffee/honey if you were cultivating oyster myc? kthx4help.

Coffee would probably turn your agar acidic. Coffee is used in bulk substrate (used coffee grounds) in small ratios-1:10 of overall volume. I wouldn't recommend putting coffee in agar. Glad to see another Iowan has interests in mush cult.

A slant is agar in a test tube left to harden at a slant their used for myc. isolation storage over long periods of time (don't evap as quick as a petri dish. So if your looking to knock something up, go with the syringe.

So a slant would be better for long term storage? I plan on Just growing a little bit of my culture out. Using the original as a master. So I guess my question is which one will keep for longer and have the greatest concentration/amount of myc. Sorry for not being very clear. I'll try to think out my future questions a bit better. Thanks for your help.

well the slant will have more myc, also the syringe will be myc in water solution which will kill the myc over time. You could get the sland and use that to make myc syringes. Note: before you do this do you know how to make petri dishes to grow some of the culture on and how to make this into a syringe to inoculate?

From what I have read, yes. I plan on innoc grains just from a wedge that I grow out. Ill prob just scoop a piece of myc out with a scalpel and toss it on a petri dish. The simplest recipe seems to be the grocery store agar tek. I have some Now Foods Agar Powder . . . I hope that will work the same? ^^

I've never herd of NFA, but ask around it may be good. Sounds like you've got a handle on it. You may want to make a few slants from dishes ur self so you have more than 1 to work with.

I guess I don't really see the point in making syringes? I will be doing my work inside of a glove box in a "plastic room" I built. I just hung up a bunch a plastic sheeting in a closet so that It will be easy to decontaminate, and reduce air circulation. After a couple of mins inside it gets fairly hot :o Could I just keep my petri dishes / culutre slants inside my glove box to incubate? What should I do when I move these through contaminated area's to my fridge? Thanks again for your time a patience

use the search function. you need to look for those answers instead of getting everyone else to bring the answers to you. not only will you get better information quicker that way, but you'll end up learning even more information than you were looking for. all the noob questions have been asked and answered in detail on this forum, you just need to spend some time researching.

I think phil's angry?
I like syringes because you can innoc more, but then again you could just cut a lot of culture but that's a waste. The incubation in the closet sounds ok if ur sure it's sterile just keep the temp constant though around 75-80F.
Concerning moving the dudes, just cut a piece off in the box and put in test tube and then put that in some sterile container and move that into the fridge. Don't put live cultures on plates in the fridge (they're really suseptable to contam because of their poor seals.
