Humidity Issues w/ FC....any ideas
    #10090212 - 04/01/09 08:54 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

It seems like I get one problem resolved and then another occurs. I've had my FC put together for a few days now. It's a clear rubbermaid tote and the dimensions are 17x32x13. There is also a cool mist humidifier connected to the FC with a few inches of perlite in the bottom.

At first, I only had the humidifier hooked up without perlite. Humidity would only be at around 70% and get up to about 85% only after heavy misting. This morning my perlite came in so I soaked it and lined the bottom of the FC. So now I have damp perlite and the humidifier running and humidity is still only staying at 72%. Any help would be much appreciated.

i seem to remember that cool mist humidifiers are not good for FC's. You need to get one where you can actually see the mist... but its been awhile since i grew or really took part of the cultivate forum.

You need holes in that FC for FAE. Have you calibrated your hygrometer? What kind of Hygrometer are you using?

You don't need a humidifier in a shotgun FC (follow PF TEK link in sig for instructions if you don't know how to convert to shotgun) but if you insist on using one (humidifier) you will still need some FAE holes. Air flow=transpiration which is required to elevate humidity.

you don't always have to do the shotgun tek w/ the holes.  I never have and just use an aquarium air pump to move the stale air (1 fan w/ lid a day and opening to pick fruits is all u need).  Perilite should be enough on its own (if u have enough and it looks like u should) so do what fltdriver says and check ur hygrometer.

You should be fine with just the perlite for cakes.  I have a similar setup and i have 99% RH all the time.  I even have holes drilled in it on all 6 sides.  As long as the lid has a decent seal, perlite by itself should do just fine.

Its a cheap $8 analog one off of ebay.

Tomorrow I'm going to go ahead and drill a mess of 1/4in holes on all the sides and see if I have any success in raising the humidity.

yeah fltdriver82 is right in my opinion. you should calibrate that hygrometer(its something to do with salt?)i cant remember. i ended up getting a digital one at radio shack(that you dont have to calibrate). you can also find them at some pet stores.(tell them you got a lizard then they'll know what your talking about, haha)

Ok so this morning I drilled about 100 holes total on all 6 sides of my FC. So I have the cool mist humidifier, couple inches of damp perlite, holes drilled all over and I have the FC elevated a couple inches to allow airflow on all 6 sides. Hygrometer is only at 82% now and stable....its about a 10% change but definitely not as high as it needs to be. I checked the accuracy of the hygrometer earlier by wrapping it in a damp washcloth for about an hour and it read about mid 90s. Does it take a certain amount of time for the perlite to start doing what its supposed to? Any other suggestions would be great. Thanks

I think you may just have a bad hygrometer.  Those numbers don't sound right to me.

Should I try disconnecting the humidifier from the FC and just stick with the perlite and misting and see if that will bring the numbers up?

Yes, try taking the mister off and see what happens with just the perlite.

I still wasnt able to get the humidity high enough in the FC no matter what I did. Im going to order more perlite because I believe thats the problem. Used an entire 8qt bag and it only filled up to about 2 inches so Im thinking another bag, bag and a half should do the trick. Until then, I made up a few poor-mans shotgun terrariums and they seem to be working great, lots of condensation on the inner walls of the bottles, myc growing on the base of the stems, indicating high RH and shrooms are popping up like crazy.

Just know that condensation doesn't mean high humidity.  It just means a temperature differential.
