Any Mountain Bikers? Few questions.

So I really want to get into biking, I have a Rail Trail and nature preserve trails right near my house. I found this website, http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/mountain_bikes.htm, which has the cheapest prices I've seen.
I'm leaning towards the Motobecane 400HT. Anyone have any experience with this brand? I could get the Dawes Haymaker 1000 for the same price? Is one better than the other?
Is it worth it to spend the extra 40$ and get the 500HT?
Thanks in advance!

Ive never heard of motobecane. They must only sell lower end bikes.
Those bikes are cheap for a reason...
I would HIGHLY suggest that if you spent a bit more. $500-$800 on a used high quality "real" bike (made by a major manufacturer that produces high end bikes; cannondale, rocky mountain, specialized, giant, kona, etc.) will serve you alot better than those low end bikes.
Also look for Deore, or Deore LX components or better...
If you progress in the sport throughout the summer, you will have problems with those lower end motobecanes and Dawes...
However, if you expect to only ever do extremely light riding and not doing any technical riding, one of those might be alright...
Quality manufacturer and components - is the only way to go.
Places like craigslist have loads of used bikes often at great prices.
If you have any question about other models or whatever, pm me if you want.
I've been mountainbiking for 10+ years, and ride other disciplines aswell.

Thanks for the info, I'll definitely take all that into account. I'm a poor college student so my max spending limit is around $400.
I don't think I'm going to get into any technical riding, but want a good entry level bike to do some leisure riding on trails.
The site claims the List price for the 400HT is $700. Motobocane does make some high end bikes, such as this one for $2000: http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/motobecane/fly_TI_09.htm

Also I'm 6'6'' tall so I would obviously need the largest bike available. Most of the 23'' bikes are recommended for people 6'1'' to 6'4'', would I be alright?

Fair enough. You can always upgrade later if you need to.
I started on a budget entry level bike outfitted with slightly better components than the original ones you posted.
That high end ti motobecane looks alright - i dont read bike magazines or anything these days - so maybe im just out of the loop.
The brands i recommended though, you cant go wrong with. Id rather have a 5 year old Kona than a brand new entry level no matter what the brand.
Your size will pose issue's. I dont know any cyclists that are your size. What size bike have you ridden before?
I bought a bike that was too small for me and that sucked, especially for xc/trail riding - i would go to a shop and ask their advice. You should be able to measure your inseam and compare it to the standover height of the frame..
Just google "sizing a mountain bike."

If your just trail biking, nothing extreme (no large drop offs), then an entry level Iron Horse bike would be fine. You can find them on the net for about 450-550$
