Spawn to Sub ratio
    #10088181 - 04/01/09 04:22 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

Hey all, was just wondering what the ideal spawn:bulk substrate ratio is.  If it makes a differnce, I will be using Large_Dose's Easy Coir Tek and a popcorn spawn.  Any advice?

Depends on your spawn.

1:2 for cakes, popcorn or other inferior spawn material.
1:3 for WBS
1:4 for rye

Oh, I missed the part where you said you'll be using popcorn.

Popcorn is a lousy substrate, and a lousy spawn material.

Bad nutritional value, big kernels = less mycelium, less inoculation points = lower spawn ratio = lower amount of total substrate = LESS MUSHROOMS. That's the equation of popcorn...

ah i see; it's because i was unaware of this fact  also, i figured since popcorn is readily available i'd use that, but after reading this, i'm reconsidering.

use rye berries, wbs, or millet. grains are a great way to grow, but you need a pc.

You can do WBR (whole brown rice) without a PC. It's a decent grain - better than popcorn for sure.

In your experience, could you comment on how many days until full colonization using these ratios? i assume there may be a little but not much variation from poo to coir. and thanks in advance
