Casing Colonization
    #1008718 - 10/31/02 02:43 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Alright...  Here goes...

The Setup:
2 BRF cakes 4 days after 100%colonization, cased with moist verm bottom and top in an Ocean Spray White Cranberry Strawberry juice jug with a duct tape seal.

My llama friends have been been mistng about once a day; when they nuked the wet verm I think they really threw the water content off and made it much drier than it should've been.  Plus, their hygrometer is an Ass-Mart piece of shit...  They say it's never  read above 34%.

Anyway, it's been kept at temps from nightime lows of the low 70's to highs of high 80's to colonize the casing layer.  That was about a week ago and nothin is happenin...   are llamas  just impatient?

I thought light was only needed to initiate pinning, i'm still trying to see some mycelium in my casing.

Patience, young grasshopper.... have a cigarette....

I find that nuking verm is real tricky, especially your first time (I assume it is?) sterilizing by microwave. On my first attempt, the verm was too dry, but I was too cautious and didn't want to add water to my verm to risk contamination. After a while of no growth I, like yourself tried to mist the casing, but its hard to saturate a casing layer of dry verm and get the content just right, if you go under you don't solve the problem and your mycelium dies, if you go over you may be providing a vector for contams. Next time when using the microwave, after you nuke it, add some distilled water and mix it till its field capacity. Good Luck.

Yeah first time...  The llamas probably shouldn't have skipped fruiting cakes, but they read everything they could find and casing seemed the way to go.  If this casing goes horribly amiss I think the llamas will understand, they still have 10 colonized jars waiting.   Live and learn.

These colonized surpisingly quickly too, in about 10 days they were done.  It is B+ by the way, the Ilamas chose what they thought would be easiest.

Akk!  I also forgot to say I'm misting with a 1:10 H202 water mix.   Hopefully I'm not just killing everything.
