Coffee, does it really help? (A Caffeine Consideration)
    #10085277 - 04/01/09 04:06 AM (15 years, 9 months ago)

Quote:

Around 90 percent of Americans consume caffeine every single day in one form or another. More than half of all American adults consume more than 300 milligrams (mg) of caffeine every day, making it America's most popular drug by far. Caffeine is a natural component of chocolate, coffee and tea, and is used as an added energy boost in most colas and energy drinks. It%u2019s also found in diet pills and some over-the-counter pain relievers and medicines.

cited from here.

Just had to put out an interesting fact for everyone before I explain this...

I caught this on the web and thought it was worth the discussion if caffeine might hurt and/or help our endeavors in bulk cultivation.

Quote:

The radial growth and mycelial dry weight of Aspergillus niger (a fungus associated with storage deterioration of black tea) in 2% potato sucrose agar and broth medium supplemented with 1, 10, 100 and 1000 ppm of tea caffeine were investigated. Similarly, conidial germination of this fungus growth in 2% potato sucrose agar supplemented with the same concentrations of caffeine was studied using slide germination and dilution plate methods. Caffeine inhibited radial growth, mycelial production and conidial germination of A. niger in a concentration-dependent manner. Caffeine at 1000 ppm recorded the lowest mean radial growth (11.10 mm), mycelial dry weight (123 mg), spore germination (30%) and number of visible colonies (6 per 25 cm2). Restricted germ tube growth and abnormalities in sporulation structures were also observed due to the caffeine treatment.

From Here.

Now, this supposed anti-fungal capability of caffeine... what is it doing for us?  I don't know the average PPM of caffeine found in coffee... but is it enough to affect our mycelium?  And if it does... is it hurting us, or is it helping us defend against contaminant fungal spores and their germination?  Since we're introducing live mycelium via grain to this bulk additive... is that just enough momentum to get past that stage?

Is there is huge variance of caffeine content from fresh grounds to used grounds?

Could fresh grounds possibly be worse or better for us now?

Should we even care about this?  I understand that coffee comes with a plethora of other nutritional benefits... which may make this consideration pretty much null...

But I think it is still something to be mentioned..

Quote:

The amount of caffeine in an average cup of coffee (8oz/230ml) varies from between 80 to 150 milligrams. This variation is due to a number of factors. The main difference is caused by from where, and from which variety of plant, the coffee beans are harvested. As caffeine has natural anti-fungal properties, coffee plants grown in environments less favourable to the growth of fungal spores contain less caffeine. At high altitudes, the temperature and humidity is such that spores germinate too slowly to have too much of an effect on a coffee plant. So, generally speaking, the higher the altitude at which a bean is grown, the lower its caffeine content. Also Arabica beans typically have half the amount of caffeine when compared to Robusta beans.

  - here.

*EDIT*

I found this later regarding caffeine content prior to and after brewing:
Quote:

90% of the caffeine in ground coffee is extracted in the first 60 seconds of contact with hot water. Some caffeine evaporates into the air during roasting, which is one reason coffee roasters are careful to send roasting smoke up through chimneys –otherwise workers would have caffeine overdoses all day long.  A 1977 study found detectable levels of caffeine coming from coffee-roasting plants in New York City air.

from here.

So... if caffeine may actually be beneficial (for contaminant defense) then that means using fresh coffee grounds would be better for growing than used.  You're not losing the caffeine, and I'm sure you're retaining more of the natural nutrients held within coffee.

I've yet to use fresh grounds... it would become an expensive habit compared to getting free used grounds from starbucks...  Maybe I'll do an isolate comparison between the two?

Maybe you will too?  =D

This has all been covered a million times before.  Caffeine has nothing to do with why we use coffee. Decaf works as well as regular coffee, and caffeine tablets have zero effect.  Coffee has thousands of components and they help to stimulate fungi.  Use as directed in the many coffee threads I've posted.  Spent coffee grounds are an excellent additive to bulk substrates, and liquid coffee is an excellent additive to the water you soak grains in.  The addition of coffee speeds up colonization, and when spent coffee grinds are added to bulk substrates, they help to stimulate primordia formation.  Coffee also helps tremendously the amount of sclerotia produced by mexicana, morels, and other sclerotia producing species.

Hpoo has a 20:1 carbon to nitrogen ratio. This also happens to be what coffee has as well. But you need to use spent grounds because the fresh have to much acid in them.
