First grow - WBS jars dry?
    #10037311 - 03/25/09 07:15 AM (15 years, 9 months ago)

Firstly a HUGE thanks to the community for making this dream come alive! I am so excited!

I have 10 WBS jars going. The first pic is of one of the 9 jars that I PC'd for 2 hours at 8PSI and innoc'd 3 days ago. After they cooled from the PC'ing they looked gorgeous with a perfect amount of moisture. It was cultivation porn!

The first jar of the 10 I did an experiment and put half a jar of soaked WBS and inoculated without any PC or sterile process just as a benchmark for how bad my environment is. I did this 4 days ago.

The first pic is one of the sterile 9 jars and like the others, looks dry to me. The grain moves around and sounds clunky instead of soft like well hydrated grain. It moves different to how it did after the PC'ing. Can you tell from the pic if it is dry or not? If it is would I be best to inject some more moisture in them?

The second pics are of the experiment. It is much more moist that the other nine and I think pic2 is the Mycelium already growing, unless thats a similar looking mould (I can only guess from pictures). The grain looks pretty nice if a little on the wet side. Unfortunately I turned the jar around and found a small patch of Trichoderma growing (pic2). I mixed up around a 5-1 batch of distilled water-hydrogen peroxide and injected that nasty green punk with it. I guess this jar was almost destined to be contaminated but it is interesting that this jar has 2 species growing in it and the others dont look so appealing to me. Again, I'm a noob so I would love to get some feedback.

Thank you!

Pic1 - Dry jar:

Pic 2 & 3 - Contaminated jar with what I expect is a better level of moisture:

There is no way youre going to get anything out of the jar you didnt sterilize. That doesnt look like myc, it looks milky, more like bacteria. And H2o2 wont help against the mean green trich. It really only works against cobweb mold. It wont tell you anything about your environmental conditions because everything that is growing inside (mold/bacteria) was in the birdseed before you did anything with it. Which is why it neeeeeds to be pc'ed in the first place.

You dont want your grains to look wet. The moisture you want is on the inside. Good luck with the rest of your jars though!

my WBS jars fresh out of the PC look wet, but after a good shaking that water gets redistributed and they look about perfect. awhile after inoculation they do appear to be dry. but i believe all the moisture needed is contained within the grains themselves. you don't really want your grains to appear to be wet, because then they are succeptible to wet spot, and all kind of other funky nasty bad stuff.

Yeah, mine are wet right out of the pc, but soon after they look dry. few days later myc starts to show, and a couple weeks after that im spawning to bulk. Wet spots are bad and can cause many problems.

I rinsed the WBS and removed the 'floaties' then let soak for 26 hours (to be exact) then I boiled them pretty hard for 10 minutes and put them into strainers to cool. This is an RR method and worked great!

Then the usual loading the jars, lids, foil, PC, innoc...

Yeah I figured as much. It was my first grow so thought why not see what does grow so I know what to spot. On the plus side I now know how to ID the white mould thats growing. I'll PC it for a few hours and get rid of it before it causes problems. Thanks for the advice

YAY! I'm right on track! I'm only up to day 4 with no sign of growth, but I didn't relly expect to see anything till day 7-10. I only hydrated my spores for 24 hours.

Thanks guys for your help! Love this community.

Cheers.
