That's not what distinguishes it from a switch, and not all routers act as a DNS server.

Well, okay, maybe there are some routers that don't do DNS. But in this case, we can see that the computer that works has the router as its DNS server, while the computer that doesn't work has a different server. That's clearly where the problem lies.

Hagbard: what if you gives yourself a static IP address of 192.168.1.103 and a primary DNS server of 192.168.1.1?
Subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0.

I think you were confusing him posting the results of his ipconfig with me.  Both computers of mine that are plugged into the router have the the router as the DNS sever.

From the command prompt, type: "net stop dnscache" (without quotes) and see if that helps.  If so, it will only last until you reboot.  Trying this is a debug step rather than a fix.

You might also try uninstalling KB951748 if it is installed (from control panel/add remove programs).

If either of the above fix the problem, it is most likely a corrupt SP3 install.  Reinstalling SP3 should fix the problem.

Yeah, I already tried this and it didn't work.

But....SUCCESS!!!!!!

I kept reading the pages from the search zouden did and finally found another fix that I hadn't tried.  It was a download called winsock xp fix that repaired the registry and now I celebrate great success.

Thanks to everyone who helped!

Cool.  Please post the link, if you still have it, so that others with the same problem that find this thread know where to look.

It can often cure the problem of lost connections after the removal of Adware components or improper uninstall of firewall applications or other tools that modify the XP network and Winsock settings.

The only thing installed like that was Adware Alert or something like that.
