throw it at a wall
no take it and bang your palm against the bottom or hit it on an old tire. i assume you were trying to get it out of the jar. if u are just trying to break the colonized wbs up after its out of the jar, put it in a food processor or use a cheese grater.

My rye always breaks up fine against a bike tire... what grains are you using? Do you use gypsum?

If you're spawning, you'll want to break the grains up real well for the maximum amount of inoculation points. Using a tire may break the grain up enough to get it out of the jar in chunks, but you'll still need to break it up real good. I use a fork or spoon to break it up in the jar, then my hands with gloves on to finish it up after I dump it into my bulk sub.

that's why i love the millet and milo. thousands of individual grains in each qt jar. more points of contact to colonize

Sweet! Thanks for all the feedback shroomery, I scooped it all into a gallon sized zip-bag then pinched it with my fingers from outside bag to break it up as much as manually possible. I colonized a qt jar of WBS with a half pint cake in 4 days! I love this hobby

I use a bike tire fully inflated and it breaks up my rye berries into individual kernels. If the tire is on my bike and all dirty, I use a phone book or a piece of firewood to bang the jar against.
I don't use wbs because imho it sucks due to the various grains and different kernel sizes. Organic rye berries are $20 per fifty pound bag delivered right to my door, so that's what I use. Since I average buying about 200 to 300 lbs of rye berries a month, and my neighbor who operates a small organic dairy(goat milk and cheese) also uses a lot of rye, the Azure Farms distributor drops off our orders at my cabin for no extra charge. I want RR's rye hook up
But I usually just break up mine just by smacking them a few times and than shaking them a bunch, this will get them into small enough pieces most of the time to get them out of the jar and after that Id just use my hands to separate them all when Id spawn them

I just smack my colonized WBS jars against a phone book, never had a problem breaking them up no matter how thick it was.

I have had great results with WBS, but I agree with RR. "I don't use wbs because imho it sucks due to the various grains and different kernel sizes.RR" Cost is not a big issue, availability is. You are using a uniform material that may decrease contamination problems, breaks up well, colonizes fairly fast, and has a good reputation with some of the more experienced growers. I just prefer to use it for many reasons. I used it a few times as a substitute when I was in a bind. WBS has proven to work, rye berries are superior. Smack against a tire.

I found a place(It was not easy) within driving distance with a comparable price but it does not say organic. The guy who works there says that it has not been treated with anything because its for animal feed but I don't know if I trust it

I know its hard to see, but I keep a bike tire right under my work table.

Bottom left corner.
I use it constantly. Great tool.

Make darn sure you air up the bike tire to around 50 to 60 psi before using each time. If the tire is soft, the jar will compress it right to the rim, and shatter your jar, which makes a horrible mess of your colonized grains all over the floor. I'm sure you guys who use bike tires have already learned this the hard way, but for the new growers, be advised. Keep a tire pump right next to the tire, because they'll lose pressure after a few days. RR

Thats a damn good point!
Nothing worse than a lovely colinised grain all over the floor and ruined.
If my mate ever gets his pressure cooker i will be trying wbs soon. Id go with rye but we dont need it in large amounts, a small bag of WBS will probably last us a few months and its pretty cheap.

Maybe you can,I was paying like a buck a lb at the helth food store for rye when I was growing cubes, since I came out of "Retirement" and got these edible cultures I found a place that sells 55 lb bags for 20 something dollars.Google "Feed store..In,your state" and you just may find a place like I did,as I said its a bit of a cruise but if you stock up it could be well worth the drive. Its a hell of allot closer than I ever seen a livestock animal that would eat such a thing

After hitting at least a few hundred jars against the part of my leg right above my knee, I don't even feel it anymore. lol I'm pretty sure those nerve endings are shot for life. Probably better off with the bike tire. But I'm sure it's going to come in hardy for fending off the zombies.
