My mother says ther is mercury in the newspaper and that is why it could be dangerous to cultivate anything on them... or to give it to animals. I know this is quite surely an urban myth, but do you have any details concerning this? The thing could be limited to Europe.

She said something about colours being toxic. Ok, this myth may be limited just to our family. But remember RR talking about the mercury content in the Chinese imported shrooms? What if!?

I doubt mercury would be in the newspaper.
Does she also think that when airplanes leave white smokey trails in the sky, that it's the gov't releasing chemicals on us?

BUSTED. But I am going to ask a prining company. I sent them an email, I will let you know as soon as I receive an answer. I understand that this is absurdly illogical and I could not find any info that this is false. So I just want to be sure. Maybe 50 years ago...

I think your mom may have meant lead instead of mercury. I just found this article online.
"Threats of Toxicity in Newspaper Ink There are three ways ink can have contact with the human body. There is dermal absorption (through the skin), inhalation of ink particles into the respiratory tract (breathing), or ingestion through the mouth and into the digestive system (eating).
There is little threat of dermal absorption of ink or its ingredients once the ink is dry because the ink has achieved its stable state. The ingredients that were potentially absorbable become dry and are no longer able to be absorbed. Lead, which can be absorbed through the skin, was banned as an ingredient in ink by the EPA in 1985 and is, therefore, no longer a threat. Stall trials concluded that the ink rub-off from printed newsprint was not a concern for animals.
Inhalation is a concern only when the ink is in liquid form either in transportation or at the place of production. Particle droplets and evaporation of active ingredients are a concern because they can be inhaled if proper prevention techniques are not practiced during the printing of the newspapers. Again, however, once the ink is applied to the paper and dried, it is stable and there is little danger of inhaling ink particulates. There is a threat of inhalation of dust from finely shredded paper. In this case, the concern is over fibrous inhalation rather than the toxicity. To avoid fibrous inhalation, stall trial results suggest using shreds at least 1 inch x 1 1/2 inch or larger.
Ingestion of inks used on newsprint has not been an issue because the ingredients used in the inks are not considered toxic in either the liquid or dry state. The only animal that showed an indication of grazing on the newspaper bedding was the horse and the grazing was in limited amounts. No other animals indicated any interest in the newsprint as a food source.
These trials and ink references are for the black inks used in newsprint. The trials do not include the waxed or glossy inserts or supplements that accompany newspapers, nor does it include colored inks used on those publications"

I can understand certain vaccines in the past that contained mercury and other toxic substances/elements for children. But newpaper, what I use to wipe my ass when I run out of toilet paper surely does not have mercury.

We have something in common, when I was a child, my parents used newspapers as diapers. A little messy, but it was cheaper then papertowels.

in that case, you get 5 shrooms for putting those newspapers to good use.

Most newspapers (I believe) are printed with a soy ink. Correct me if I'm wrong.

correct. Most newspapers these days use soya based inks, which i think are actually cheaper.
I doubt they would be using lead based inks. Lead used to be in paint and that was band a long time ago.
I'd be very worried if mercury was in anything that i came into contact with. Mercury is scary stuff,

Civilized countries of the world banned lead in printing ink decades ago. China is a different story. They don't mind poisoning the whole world with their toxic wastes. Don't grow mushrooms on chinese newspapers, or for that matter buy a fucking thing made in china. This means boycotting walmart.
If you live in Europe, the newspapers are fine for growing mushrooms. RR

speaking of mercury and how poisonous it is.... Did you know that your metal fillings in your mouth have a deadly amount of mercury in each of them and they constantly give off mercury vapor. The health department will shut down a factory if there is a mercury leak of more than 100 on the vapor sniffing device(I forget the name). When scraping an old filling it gave off more than 180 on the device. When the dentis is preparing the amalgam(metal filling paste) it registers more than 250 on the device. The average life span of a dentist is in the 50's, and dental assistants mainly young woman, have become sterile from the mercury vapor in the dental office. If you have ever felt sick for a few days to weeks after getting a cavity filled at the dentist, mercury vapor from the filling that is now apart of your mouth and will be there until you die, will leak its poisonous gas from the filling every time you have your teeth cleaned, eat something crunchy or pretty much anytime it is aggravated by anything.
If you dont believe me look it up just google it. also the Documentary The Beautiful Truth has a large piece on how the mercury in the fillings we get from our ADA approved Dentists are poisoning us and causing a lot of the chronic illness in the World
